Kevin Butler, former University of Georgia legendary kicker and a member of the Georgia radio broadcast team, will each week during the 2015 football season select his offensive, defensive and special teams players of the week for Bulldawg Illustrated. Here are Butler’s selections and reasons why for the Bulldogs’ 38-10 loss to Alabama Saturday.

OFFENSE

Junior right guard Greg Pyke, one of the Bulldogs’ offensive leaders up front who helped Georgia rush for 193 yards against the rugged Crimson Tide defensive front … the first time an opposing team has run for 100 yards against Alabama this season.

The redshirt junior is my player of the game on offense,” said Butler. “Greg’s attitude and pure determination is what needs to be a characteristic for every lineman on Georgia’s team. Greg played well against a much bigger defensive line in Alabama’s front seven and fought hard. In a game where it is hard to find positives, Greg’s effort on the offensive line proved to play out with Nick Chubb earning his 13th consecutive 100-yard game. The Bulldogs can bounce back in Tennessee if Pyke’s leadership and effort spreads to his fellow linemen this week.”

DEFENSE

Senior tackle Sterling Bailey who had nine total tackles for a Georgia defense that had its backs to the wall for much of Saturday’s game.

The senior defensive lineman had 9 total tackles in a battle of the big boys against Alabama,” said Butler. “Derrick Henry is a beast and Georgia did a pretty good job containing Henry in the first half and Sterling was a big factor in making Alabama work to get the victory. The special team mistakes helped Alabama play on a short field and when that happens it’s never a good thing for the defense. Sterling is in his final year at Georgia and has fought hard to be a starter and this is his time to step out in front and be a leader… and we need him to!”

SPECIAL TEAMS

With the Bulldogs getting a punt blocked for an Alabama touchdown, having inconsistent punting and also allowing the Tide to have 69 yards on six punt returns, no Georgia player earned the special team honor this week.
