UGA MEN’S TENNIS: Bulldogs Are Going Back to Cali

[su_spacer size=”40″] The 6th ranked UGA Men’s Tennis team will be heading west to Westwood, California for a couple of matches this weekend. Georgia will face the 12th ranked UCLA men on Saturday, January 30th at 4:00 PM ET, and then will take on 8th ranked Southern California at 1:00 PM ET on Sunday.
[su_spacer size=”40″] The Bulldogs hold an all-time record of 13-6 over the Bruins in dual matches with the Dawgs taking last year’s meeting between the two schools, 4-2. On the other hand, Southern Cal has a 16-11 all-time record against UGA after the Trojans won last year’s meeting, 4-0.

GEORGIA ADVANCES TO ITA INDOOR NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS:

[su_spacer size=”40″] The Bulldogs went 2-0 this past weekend during the ITA Kick-Off Weekend from January 22nd through Sundy, January 24th in Athens, GA at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. The men defeated 48th ranked UC Santa Barbara, 4-1, durin the first round, and they also were victorious over number 44 Memphis, 4-1 in the finals. Their performance during the Kick-Off weekend places UGA in the 2016 ITA Indoor National Championships to be held from February 12th-15th.

AUSTIN SMITH EARNS HONOR:

[su_spacer size=”40″] Senior Austin Smith, who is currently ranked 28th, was named the SEC Player of the Week on January 27th after going 2-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles, helping Georgia punch its ticket to the ITA National Indoor Championships, which take place from February 12th-15th. Smith is from Cumming, Georgia, and the Peach State native helped UGA put away the 44th ranked Memphis men 4-1 on Sunday with a three-set victory against the Tigers’ Andrew Watson. who is currently ranked 87th, at the top singles spot.

WINNING STREAK, DOMINATION AT HOME:

[su_spacer size=”40″] The Bulldogs have been nothing short of dominant at home in Athens. Coming off its 2-0 weekend at the ITA Kick-Off weekend, the Georgia Men’s Tennis team owns a 12-match regular season home court winning streak. The streak started February 22nd, 2015 with a 9-0 win over Furman. The Bulldogs came into the 2014-15 season riding a 24-match winning streak before falling to Southern Cal 4-0 on February 2nd, 2015. UGA has won 36 of its last 37 home matches.

FALL REVIEW:

[su_spacer size=”40″] Georgia was led by Walker Duncan who posted 14 singles wins in the fall. Duncan was followed by Austin Smith with 10 victories, including a team-best three wins against ranked opponents. Sophomore Wayne Montgomery won his second straight Southern Intercollegiate title, a feat that hasn’t been accomplished by a Bulldog since John Isner in 2005-06. In doubles No. 1-ranked Austin Smith and Ben Wagland won 12 matches and earned an at-large bid to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships where they won the consolation title.

WHAT’S NEXT:

[su_spacer size=”40″] Georgia returns home to Athens for a dual match against rival Georgia Tech on February 6th at 3:00 PM ET. Following the match against the Yellow Jackets, the Bulldogs will head to Charlottesville, Virginia for the 2016 ITA Indoor National Championships from February 12th-15th.
