There are a number of position needs for the Georgia Bulldog’s football team looking ahead and down the road in 2017, and one of those areas of need is at quarterback. Even though the Dawgs signed highly touted 5-star prospect Jacob Eason out of Lake Stevens, Washington, and he is expected to be the favorite to win the starting signal caller job for the next several years, after the 2016 season is in the books, Georgia will need to address not only the depth behind as well as life after Eason.
UPDATED 3:00 PM ET: Jake Fromm flipped his commitment from Alabama to Georgia just shortly before 11:30 AM ET Thursday morning.
So what does the roster look like at quarterback for the 2017 season right now?
Jacob Eason – 6 foot 6, 227 lbs (Sophomore)
Nick Robinson – 6 foot 0, 200 lbs (PWO RS Sophomore)
Brice Ramsey – 6 foot 3, 213 lbs (Senior)
Sam Vaughn – 6 foot 3, 189 lbs (WO RS Sophomore)
As you can see, the only two scholarship QBs for 2017 are Eason and Ramsey, and it is difficult to predict if Ramsey will stick around for his fifth year at UGA. Ramsey would be a graduate after the 2016 season and could transfer without having to sit out a year, being able to use his final year of eligibility and play in 2017. If he does decide to play elsewhere in 2017, that would leave Georgia with big question marks at the QB position if anything should happen to Eason where he was unable to play due to injury or some unforeseen circumstance.
In my book, that means QB is a position of need for the Bulldawgs for the class of 2017; so, how many quarterbacks will take in 2017 and who is on their radar at the moment?
Well, they have one so far.
Jake Fromm was committed to Alabama before flipping his commitment to Georgia earlier today, Thursday, shortly before noon time. Interestingly enough, Georgia offered him the same day that Bailey Hockman decommitted. Fromm is a 6 foot 3 and 220 lbs four-star pro-style prospect out of Houston County High School in Warner Robins, GA.

Georgia has offered six 2017 QBs so far including Jake Fromm. Let’s take a look at the other five offers:
Jake Bentley
Bailey Hockman
Johnathan Lewis
David Mills
N’Kosi Perry
The previous coaching staff offered Jake Bentley and Johnathan Lewis during the month of November last fall. Bentley is a 6 foot 4, 215 lbs four-star, pro-style prospect out of Opelika, AL, and Lewis is a 6 foot 3 and 2015 lbs three-star dual threat prospect out of Saint Peters Prep from Jersey City, NJ.
Bailey Hockman was also an offer by the previous coaching staff and had been committed to Georgia. He decommitted on December 14th after Coach Mark Richt was forced to resign and just a week after Kirby Smart was announced as Georgia’s new head coach. Hockman is a 6 foot 2 and 210 lbs four-star prospect out of McEachern High School from Powder Springs, GA.
The new staff has offered Jake Fromm on December 14th as previously mentioned; David Mills out of GAC from Norcross on February 23rd, GA; and N’Kosi Perry from Vanguard, FL on February 1st.
N’Kosi Perry was the next QB in this class to be offered by the new staff after Fromm, and he is a 6 foot 4 and 175 lbs three-star dual-threat prospect from Vanguard High School out of Ocala, Florida. Perry was recruited by current WR Coach James Coley when he was at the University of Miami during the 2015 season and was committed to the Hurricanes when Georgia made the offer. Three days later, he decommitted from the “U” on the 4th.
The most recent offer that went out for a QB was to 6 foot 3 and 192 lbs David Mills. The four-star pro-style prospect slings the ball through the air for the Greater Atlanta Christian School varsity football team out of Norcross, GA.
It is still early in the 2017 recruiting class to get a firm grip on who else could commit to Georgia at QB other than Fromm, but David Mills has stated he would be making a decision soon, possibly as early as this spring before practice starts. If that is the case, what are Georgia’s chances? While some have worried the Dawgs were late in offering Mills, he has said that is not the case, but Stanford University is Georgia’s main competition and a strong draw for Mills, visiting there this past weekend. Where Georgia may have an advantage over Stanford is that the Cardinals do not allow early enrollees, which is something Mills has said he would like to do if possible.
Georgia will take at least one QB for the class of 2017, and I expect Jake Fromm to stick with his commitment to UGA. The Bulldawgs really need to take two to shore the position depth wise. Could David Mills be the second of the two or will it be a dual-threat prospect like N’Kosi Perry?
I strongly suspect Coach Smart and Coach Chaney to try to sign a dual-threat prospect to the second spot. Perry would be ideal in this case, but his recruitment is wide open the moment. And Georgia is not going to stand pat on just the six offers at QB either. Expect more offers to go out over the next several weeks and months. One target to keep your eye on that could receive an offer down the road in the not to distant future is Cedar Grove High School’s Jelani Woods, a 3-star pro-style prospect that stands at 6 foot 7 and weighs in at 225 lbs.
