The Georgia Bulldogs conducted their fifth of 15 spring practices – and the third full-pads workout – on Thursday at their temporary home at UGA’s Club Sports Facility. More than 500 attendees for the annual Georgia Coaching Clinic also were on hand.

The clinic features a session with former Bulldog Jake Scott, the Most Valuable Player of Super Bowl VII, and a chalk talk with UGA coaches on Thursday evening. On Friday, speakers include Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians and former Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford, the No. 1 overall player in the 2009 NFL Draft, before concluding with an afternoon practice at Sanford Stadium.

After practice, junior linebacker Reggie Carter, who missed all but one game last season due to a shoulder injury, said he is happy to be back on the field. Two seasons ago, Carter recorded 28 tackles in 12 games. Last fall, he was expected to help fill the void left when Amarlo Herrera and Ramik Wilson departed for the NFL following the 2014 season.

“It’s going good,” Carter said. “I’m just trying to get back into a rhythm. It was tough (last season), but you have to move on. I’m trying to not look back. I’m trying to move forward.”

Running back Sony Michel said he can see Carter’s excitement over returning to the field.

“He has been taking some shots at me in practice,” Michel said. “We’ve been physical and competing against each other in practice. It has been great. I think he’s happy to be back on the field. You can kinda see it. He’s a very competitive guy.”

Michel led the Bulldogs with 1,201 yards rushing last season, the majority of that was gained after Nick Chubb suffered a season-ending injury in the sixth game of the year. Michel is getting the vast majority of the work at tailback this spring as Chubb continues to rehab.

“It’s tough, but on the positive side it actually helps me out getting conditioned, getting my weight down and getting in shape the right way,” Michel said. “It’s making me a better football player overall.”

The Bulldogs’ spring drills will culminate with the annual G-Day intrasquad game on Saturday, April 16 at 4 p.m. That contest will be televised nationally on ESPNU, with Dave Neal calling the play-by-play, former Georgia All-American and Academic All-American Matt Stinchcomb serving as color analyst and Shannon Spake handling the role as sideline reporter.
