For the ninth time in program history, the Georgia softball team will host a NCAA Regional as the No. 16 national seed, the NCAA announced on Sunday night.

Regional action begins on Friday with Georgia (40-17) playing Maine (28-19) and will be televised on ESPN3 at 3:30 p.m. ET. The Athens field will also consist of Oklahoma State (29-24) and Northwestern (26-26) as those teams will play on Friday at 1 p.m. ET. The regional round of play features a four-team double-elimination bracket.

Georgia is making both its 15th-consecutive and 15th overall NCAA postseason appearance in school history, all under head coach Lu Harris-Champer. The 15-straight appearances have Georgia as one of 11 schools in the nation to accomplish such a feat while just one of three in the Southeastern Conference.

The Bulldogs are 54-30 overall in NCAA postseason play and advanced to the Women’s College World Series Final Four in 2009 and 2010. Last season, Georgia advanced to its second consecutive Super Regional appearance, falling to national runner-up Michigan in Ann Arbor. It marked the program’s eighth trip to the postseason’s second round.

A total of 64 teams were selected to the NCAA Tournament with 32 conferences being awarded automatic qualification while the remaining 32 slots were filled with at-large selections to complete the bracket.

The SEC sent a total of 11 teams to the tournament, with eight of those teams earning one of the 16 national seeds and four earning top eight national seeds. Each of the 16 Regional winners will advance to the Super Regional round of play on May 26-29. The winner of the Athens Regional is paired with the winner of the Gainesville Regional.

In Super Regional action, eight sites play host to a best-of-three game series with the winners earning one of eight spots in the NCAA Division I Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City.
