Construction projects updating three of Georgia’s athletic facilities — with a total cost of over $11 million — were approved by the University of Georgia Athletic Association Board of Directors during its quarterly meeting here Friday.
 
 
J. Reid Parker Director of Athletics Greg McGarity proposed the following plans to update UGA’s existing facilities:
 
> Three separate projects within Stegeman Coliseum, all included as Phase 2 of an overall update: the installation of a scoreboard, suspended over the midpoint of the basketball court; the replacement of all the existing spectator seats; and the installation of light-emitting diode (LED) lights, also called “ribbon” lighting around the upper facade of seating.
> An expansion of the Boyd Golf Center — home to both men’s and women’s golf programs — to include an additional 4,000 square feet.
> Two updates to Sanford Stadium: the installation of LED ribbon lights that encompass the entire upper-level facade, and also the integration of the stadium’s four separate fire alarm systems into a single system.
 
 
The total cost of all three projects will be just over $11.7 million, McGarity said.
 
 
McGarity also provided updates to three ongoing construction projects:
 
> Phase 1 of the Stegeman Coliseum project — a large-scale aesthetic improvement to the southeast end zone — was completed this week and offers a dramatically different view of a space that was previously covered with banners from the three sports competing in the Coliseum. With the Phase 2 project starting next spring, the total expenditures on enhancements to Stegeman Coliseum in a 2-year span will exceed $7 million.
> The Indoor Athletic Facility is currently on schedule and on budget. This project will also include renovating three athletic fields adjacent to the IAF.
> The Sanford Stadium west end zone study is proceeding as planned. This study aims to optimize a major enhancement to the west end zone of the stadium, including a new home locker room for the Bulldogs, a space to host and entertain prospects on game day, and improvements to restroom and concession areas.
