Pigskin Pithy: A Trio of College Football Bowls to Start off Your Christmas Holiday Weekend

Pigskin Pithy edit by Bob Miller 23-DEC-2016

Christmas falls on Sunday this weekend and for many, it will be a weekend of celebration with friends and family and of traveling to and fro. But if you have some time to spare or need a break from the hustle and bustle of the holidays, there are three bowl games today to fill your football heart with cheer.

POPEYES BAHAMAS BOWL

(7-5) Eastern Michigan vs. (9-3) Old Dominion

Friday’s slate of games and the weekend gets a kicked off with the Popeyes Bahamas Bowl on the beautiful island of New Providence in Nassau. And if you are a fan or player of a team that is not in the college football playoffs or playing in a major bowl game, this has to be one of the best post-season consolation prizes you could hope for, especially if you are from Michigan or it’s your very first bowl game appearance in the history of your program.

That is the case for the (7-5) Eastern Michigan Eagles who travel some 1,240 miles south from the frosty, snowy North to warm tropical waters and (9-3) Old Dominion, which is the first bowl game in the history of Monarchs’ football. Old Dominion is favored by four and half points; so, give me the Monarchs in their first bowl game for the win 35-27.

ARMED FORCES BOWL

(8-5) Louisiana Tech vs. (9-4) #25 Navy

The next game on the docket for Friday is the Armed Forces Bowl featuring (8-5) Louisiana Tech vs. (9-4) Navy. The Midshipmen are ranked 25th in the nation but are coming off their first loss to service academy rival Army in 14 years as well as losing the conference title game to Temple. Can they overcome a number of key injuries and the back-to-back losses to get the win versus the Bulldogs of La-Tech?

I have no doubt the Naval Academy’s coaching staff, as well as the outstanding men that play for the Midshipmen, can overcome the losses, but the injuries are another matter as they are down to quarterback number three and missing several key running backs. As much as it pains me being a Navy fan, give me the Bayou Bulldogs 37-28.

DOLLAR GENERAL BOWL

(8-5) Ohio vs. (9-3) Troy

If you are staying in on this Friday evening, then you might consider passing your time by tuning into the Dollar General Bowl at 8 p.m. ET, which will pit (8-5) Ohio vs. (9-3) Troy. This game will be about Troy’s offense versus Ohio’s defense, but the Trojans’ defense are also quite capable while the Bobcats’ offense is lukewarm at best. Give me the Trojans with the better quarterback and offense to come out on top 28-21.
