Georgia men’s tennis team freshman Nathan Ponwith made the most of his collegiate debut by earning the SEC Freshman of the Week honors following the Bulldogs’ win against Georgia Tech last Friday.
A native of Scottsdale, Ariz., Ponwith was impressive in both singles and doubles, picking up a 6-0, 6-1 victory at the No. 4 court in singles after teaming with Walker Duncan for a 6-2 victory in doubles. During that match against the Yellow Jackets, Ponwith was part of a young Georgia lineup with five of the six players being underclassmen.
“Nathan really had a strong performance with wins in singles and doubles at Georgia Tech,” head coach Manuel Diaz said. “He has been working extremely hard during the Holiday season and the first three weeks in January. This is a tremendous honor for him personally and is a great way to start his Bulldog career. He will play a big role for us this season, and I look forward to watching him grow throughout the year.”
Ponwith came to Georgia ranked as the No. 1 recruit in the nation for the 2016 class. He went 8-4 in singles and recorded five doubles wins during his first fall in Athens. He has won three-straight singles matches and four- consecutive doubles contests dating back to October.
This week, Ponwith and the Bulldogs host the ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Athens. Georgia welcomes Purdue at 1 p.m. ET Friday at the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Courts.
