Gymdogs’ freshman Rachel Dickson was named SEC Gymnast of the Week following an outstanding standout performance at the Mardi Gras Invitational this past Friday. The Mardi Gras Invitational is a quad meet that featured the top two ranked gymnastics teams in the country in No. 1 Oklahoma and No. 2 LSU along with another top 25 squad in No. 13 Missouri.
Dickson posted career highs on bars (9.95), beam (9.925) and in the all-around (39.55) in addition to a 9.925 on floor as she had arguably the best meet of her young career and helped Georgia receive its highest road score of the season.
“What an honor for Rachel to be named SEC Gymnast of the Week, especially as a freshman among all the incredible athletes within our conference,” said University of Georgia gymnastics head coach Danna Durante. “She’s a spark for her team and her future is bright!”
The meet was Dickson’s second all-around effort that went for 39.5 or better, last achieving the feat in her first-ever all-around performance against Missouri on Jan. 27, a 39.525.
A native of Canton, Michigan, Dickson has made an impact as a freshman with the Gymdogs. She has competed all-around for the last four meets and boasts career highs of 9.9 on vault, 9.95 on bars, 9.925 on beam, 9.95 on floor and 39.55 in the all-around.
This is the first weekly SEC award for Dickson in her career and the second for the Gymdogs this season with senior Rachel Schick receiving the honor after her performances in January against Auburn on the 13th and North Carolina State during a home meet on the 16th.
The Gymdogs return to action Friday as they take on No. 1 Oklahoma in Norman. The meet is slated for an 8 p.m. ET start time and will stream live on SoonerSports.tv.
