As the Georgia Bulldogs zero in on the 2015 season opener against Louisiana Monroe a week from Saturday, Monday’s practice was my first opportunity this camp to watch Georgia’s three quarterbacks throw the football.
Of course, we’re talking about Brice Ramsey, Faton Bauta and Greyson Lambert, the three guys who are battling for the starting assignment come Sept. 5 against the Warhawks at Sanford Stadium.
With head coach Mark Richt standing off to the side and offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer kneeling while facing the quarterbacks, each of the three were again getting equal repetitions, as were the quarterbacks behind the big three … Sam Vaughn and Nick Robinson.
At least that’s what they were doing in the very brief time, periods 3 and 4, that the media was allowed to watch. With less than two weeks until the opening kickoff, you would think Richt and Schotty will be paring the QB rotation down to two guys and, just maybe, as they continue today’s practice with all us print, internet and radio-TV guys back up here in the Butts-Mehre building, the Bulldog offensive masterminds may be doing just that.
Rumors were circulating this past week that Ramsey and the transfer from Virginia, Lambert, would come out of preseason as 1-2 in the quarterback pecking order, with the dual threat junior, Bauta, being relegated to the No. 3 spot.
Only Richt and Schottenheimer know whether this is true or not and following this past Saturday’s second scrimmage, the Georgia head coach acted like he had absolutely no idea who his starting signal-caller was going to be, saying neither Ramsey, nor Lambert, nor Bauta had done anything special to show they deserve the job over the other two guys.
After watching a couple of passing drills today, I’m holding to my long-time opinion that Brice Ramsey, last year’s backup to senior Hutson Mason, will be Georgia’s starting quarterback here at the start of the season.
In the first drill, the coaches had the players working on their drop backs and footwork. To me, Ramsey looked quicker in his movements than did Bauta and Lambert. Since they were whistling the football to a team manager standing just 10 yards behind the line of scrimmage, all were on target throwing the ball. But it might be noted that Lambert, Ramsey and Bauta went 1-2-3 in this particular drill. And I might add that Greyson Lambert, with this 6-5 height, does cut a striking figure out there on the practice field. As of the moment, he’s the tallest quarterback in the University of Georgia’s long history. Lambert will hold that distinction until January when the nation’s top-rated prep quarterback, 6-5½ Jacob Eason brings his considerable passing skills to Athens.
But when they all lined up side by side behind three centers snapping the ball and then throwing to Georgia’s receivers simultaneously, here especially was where you could see Ramsey’s superior arm strength and accuracy. On sideline routes, both Lambert and Bauta had passes that didn’t reach their intended targets and on other throws, they were off the mark high and wide. At the same time, Ramsey was throwing strikes both on the sideline routes and over-the-middle shots.
Of course, let it be noted that this was just one practice day and for the few minutes that we got to watch the quarterbacks, but if the Bulldogs were starting the season tomorrow, my vote would be for the former Camden County field general, Brice Ramsey, to take the very first snap.
But then, the only votes that count in this scenario belong to Mark Richt and Brian Schottenheimer and if these three quarterbacks are indeed as closely bunched as the coaches have indicated they are, the Bulldawg Nation may see the coaches use multiple guys in the opening two games vs. La-Monroe and the Vanderbilt Commodores.
And then, just maybe, come the season’s big third game against Steve Spurrier and his Gamecocks in Sanford Stadium, Richt and Schotty and all the Georgia fans will have a good idea of who’s going to be THE MAN under center for the Bulldogs this fall.
