[su_spacer size=”20″] Auburn edged Georgia 4-2 Thursday at Plainsman Park in game one of a Southeastern Conference series.

The Tigers (27-16, 8-11 SEC) grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first, sending nine to the plate, and they left the bases loaded. Anfernee Grier, Daniel Robert and Blake Logan registered RBI. Georgia got a run back in the second as Zack Bowers led off with a double and later scored on a groundout by Skyler Weber. In the third, the Bulldogs cut the deficit to 3-2 after Mitchell Webb singled and scored on a groundout by Nick King. The Tigers answered in their half of the inning to make it 4-2 but stranded two more for a total of seven to that point with five in scoring position.

Auburn right-hander Cole Lipscomb pitched seven innings for the win while Bulldog junior right-hander David Sosebee dropped to 2-2 after allowing four runs on seven hits in six innings. Lipscomb scattered six hits, two runs (only one earned) with one walk and two strikeouts. Georgia got two scoreless innings of relief from senior Taylor Hicks. The Bulldogs are now 21-21 overall and 6-12 in the SEC.

“It was a crazy game, we hit a few balls on the nose, but they were caught, and the big early inning hurt us along with a couple of plays we didn’t make, and that’s the difference,” Georgia coach Scott Stricklin said. “David battled, both starting pitchers did and then settled in after a rough start, and it was good to see David give us six innings.”

Georgia’s Stephen Wrenn went 3-for-4 with a stolen base to give him 21 on the year, which ranks second in the SEC. Both teams missed scoring opportunities throughout the night as the Bulldogs went 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position while the Tigers were 3-for-11. Auburn’s Trey Wingenter picked up his second save by taking care of the final two innings.
