The Georgia baseball team will warm the bats and oil down the leather as they get ready for a two-game series, hosting Xavier on Tuesday and Wednesday at Foley Field. For game one on Tuesday, first pitch is set for 6:02 p.m. ET.
Georgia’s Ike Cousins head baseball coach Scott Stricklin announced that the Bulldogs (5-6) will start a pair of freshmen pitchers in right-hander Christian Ryder (0-1, 7.88 ERA) and left-hander Justin Glover (0-1, 0.00 ERA) against the Musketeers (5-6). It will be Ryder’s second career start and the first for Glover. The Bulldogs used just six pitchers during last weekend’s UAB series and Ryder and Glover did not see any action. The Musketeers will counter with a pair of senior left-handers in Brad Kirschner (0-1, 6.75 ERA) and Trent Astle (1-0, 5.40 ERA).

DIAMOND DOG BYTES:
Georgia has already played seven one-run games this season, going 3-4 in these tight contests. The Bulldogs are in the middle of an 11-game stretch at Foley Field, and this week, the opponents are Xavier and Rider (3-5). The Bulldogs have never faced Xavier, and they are 1-0 against Rider, and it was a huge victory. Georgia posted a 13-5 win over Broncs to win the 1987 NCAA Northeast Regional in Atlanta to send the Bulldogs to the school’s first College World Series!
Georgia went 2-2 this past week to stand at 5-6 this season. While Georgia is aiming to heat up offensively, the pitching carried the Bulldogs to a series win over UAB, posting back-to-back shutouts. Georgia scored only four runs against the Blazers and that was enough as the pitching staff registered a 0.64 ERA. For the year, Georgia is batting .241 with 10 home runs while the staff ERA is 4.21 with three shutouts. After allowing 31 earned runs in the opening weekend series to College of Charleston, Georgia’s pitching staff has an impressive 1.89 ERA in the past eight games, surrendering only 15 ER in the last 71 innings.
Junior RHP Chase Adkins (2-0, 2.25 ERA) fired a complete game four-hit shutout to clinch the series over UAB this past Sunday. Adkins faced just three over the minimum in going the distance of a 1-0 victory. He now has pitched 15 scoreless innings. Adkins, who threw 94 pitches, logged Georgia’s first complete game since eventual first round lottery selection Robert Tyler one-hit Alabama last year. Senior LHP Andrew Gist (0-0, 1.35 ERA, 1 SV) has been the most consistent Bulldog pitcher this year, and he collected his first career save in a combined shutout of UAB this past Saturday. He tossed three scoreless frames to lower his ERA to a team-best 1.35. In 13.1 innings this year, he has 15 strikeouts and only one walk. Freshman RHP Tony Locey (2-1, 4.50 ERA) has pitched 11 scoreless innings. He was part of a combined four-hit shutout in a 2-0 win this past Saturday over UAB.
While the Bulldogs are on Spring Break this week, they still attended some classes. Approximately a dozen players and members of the coaching staff spent part of their Monday visiting area elementary schools and spending time with the students.
