DIAMOND DOG BYTES:
Georgia will play its second straight five-game week. After battling Mercer and Presbyterian here, Georgia opens Southeastern Conference action Friday at sixth-ranked LSU (12-4). All five games this week will be available on SECN+.
Series History: Georgia leads the all-time series with Mercer 46-15; however, the Bulldogs dropped a 6-5 decision to the Bears in Macon back on Feb. 21. Georgia is a perfect 15-0 against Presbyterian while LSU leads the series with Georgia 64-21-3. Georgia last played the Blue Hose and Tigers in 2015. That year, Georgia beat Presbyterian 3-0 in Athens while then No. 2 LSU took a rain-shortened series 2-0 at Foley Field. In Georgia’s last trip to Baton Rouge coming in 2014, the Bulldogs went 0-2-1 against then No. 6 LSU, tying the final game of the series 2-2 in 13 innings due to a travel curfew. LSU is 11-0 at home this season.
Georgia freshman C/DH Austin Biggar (.317-1-7) leads the team in hitting in while sophomore C/DH Michael Curry ranks first with four home runs and 17 RBI to go with a .254 batting average. Biggar enters the week with a team-best seven-game hitting streak. Freshman SS Cam Shepherd has been heating up at the plate as he batted .409 (9-for-22) with a home run and seven RBI last week. Shepherd has started all 16 games at shortstop, and he’s batting .266-1-8 with a .965 fielding percentage in 85 chances.
Junior RHP Chase Adkins headlines the Bulldog pitching staff at 3-0 with a 2.08 ERA in four Sunday starts. He has allowed just one run in his last 21 innings pitched. Adkins and LSU’s Jared Poché are the only two SEC hurlers with a complete game shutout this year. Georgia has utilized 19 pitchers this season and that is the most since 19 were used during the 2014 campaign. Georgia has a pair of two-way players in OF/LHP Tucker Bradley (0-0, 2.70 ERA & .278-0-0) and 3B/RHP Aaron Schunk, (0-0, 0.00 ERA & .212-0-8).
