The Georgia baseball team travel just a short drive down the road to take on their in-state rival Georgia Tech in Atlanta for a 7:00 p.m. start time this evening. This will be the second of three games between Bulldogs and Yellow Jackets.

 
On April 11 at Foley Field in Athens, Georgia dispatched Tech 5-1. The teams will meet for a third time on May 9th at SunTrust Park in Atlanta, the new home of the Atlanta Braves. For the past 14 years, Georgia and Tech squared off at Turner Field to benefit Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, and the game annually drew more than 19,000 fans and raised more than $200,000. Georgia went 9-5 in those games against Tech. In records dating back to 1950, Georgia leads the all-time series with Tech 119-102. Georgia won the series 2-1 over Tech last season. Sophomore LHP Kevin Smith will get the start against Tech Tuesday while the Yellow Jackets counter with junior RHP Ben Schniederjans (2-3, 3.86 ERA).
 
 
The Bulldogs are batting .259 with an ERA of 5.08 and a fielding percentage of .956. This past weekend, Georgia went 1-2 against Vanderbilt, posting a combined two-hit shutout in a 1-0 victory on Saturday that featured Chase Adkins (eight innings) and Smith (one inning) on the mound and a home run in the eighth inning from freshman Cam Shepherd. Tech went 2-1 against Virginia Tech in Blacksburg.

Bulldogs To Watch
 
Sophomore C/DH Michael Curry (.342-8-39), an All-Conference candidate, is aiming to capture the team’s Triple Crown, leading the squad in batting, home runs and RBI. He has started all 41 games this year at either catcher or designated hitter. In SEC action, Curry is batting .338-3-12. Curry is a Dean’s List student and is on the CoSIDA Academic All-District ballot, sporting a 3.37 GPA as a Computer Science major.
 
 
Shortstop Cam Shepherd is a Freshman All-Star candidate as he’s started all 41 games, is batting .329-5-22 and ranks among the SEC leaders with 57 hits, 88 total bases plus a .359 batting average in league action. Last week, he hit a home run in three consecutive games, finishing with a .375 mark, going 6-for-16 with four runs scored and six RBI. In the Vanderbilt series, he batted .364 (4-for-11) with a pair of home runs and two RBI. Also of note at the plate, sophomore 1B Adam Sasser (.255-2-7) is batting .429 (12-for-28) over the last seven games.
 
 
Junior RHP Chase Adkins (5-4, 3.43 ERA) and junior Kevin Smith (1-4, 6.90 ERA, 1 SV) combined on a two-hit shutout in a 1-0 win over Vanderbilt last Saturday as they were matched up against Commodore ace Kyle Wright who carried a one-hitter to the eighth. Adkins fired eight scoreless frames, allowing just two hits, two walks and struck out six. Smith notched his first career save by taking care of the ninth and had a pair of strikeouts.

Banged-Up Bulldogs
 
Georgia’s infield depth has taken a hit this past week after two more Bulldogs were lost to season-ending injuries. Freshman Aaron Schunk (.290-1-18), who had started 37 games at third base, broke his left thumb against Clemson while junior utility infielder Trey Logan (.190-0-6) broke his left collarbone against Vanderbilt. Georgia has been without projected starting first baseman sophomore Patrick Sullivan all year due to an illness. Also, junior outfielder Will Campbell (.237-3-13), who has made 29 starts, has missed the last eight games due to a sore back.
 
 
On Deck
 
The Bulldogs play host to No. 8 Florida (27-13, 10-8 SEC) in a SEC series on SEC Network+ starting Friday at Foley Field at 7 p.m. On Saturday at 2 p.m., Georgia will hold its annual Lettermen’s Day with a special focus on the 30-year anniversary of the 1987 team that was the first Bulldog squad in school history to advance to the College World Series. Florida leads the series with Georgia 173-80-2. The Bulldogs last won a series over the Gators in 2013, going 2-1 in Athens. Florida has won the last three series, posting a sweep in Gainesville in 2014 and winning 2-1 in Athens in 2015 and 2-1 Gainesville in 2016.
