Here are a few tidbits regarding the Bulldogs:
Georgia leads the all-time series with UAB 4-0, and every game has been in Athens. They first met in 2000, a 10-inning affair that ended 9-8. In 2013, the Bulldogs swept a three-game set, winning 14-2, 6-2 and 13-2. Former Georgia head coach and College Baseball Hall of Famer Ron Polk, now 73, is in his ninth season as a volunteer coach on UAB’s staff led by Brian Shoop. Coach Shoop served under the legendary Polk at Miss. State from 1983-89. Polk was the head coach at Georgia for two seasons (2000-01), and in 2001, the Bulldogs won the SEC (for the first time since 1954), advanced to the College World Series (for the first time since 1990) and finished 47-22 (20-10 SEC) and ranked No. 7. Polk is one of only three coaches in college baseball history to take three different teams to the CWS (Ga. Southern, Miss. State & Georgia).
Georgia has already played five one-run games, going 2-3 in these tight contests. Despite 10 walks and four wild pitches by Kennesaw State, the Owls edged Georgia 5-4 this past Tuesday as the Bulldogs left 11 men on base. After the series with the Blazers, Xavier, Rider, Mercer and Presbyterian all visit in March before SEC play begins at nationally-ranked LSU on March 17.
Georgia is batting .264 with nine home runs, a 5.63 ERA and a .969 fielding percentage. The leading hitters are sophomore 1B Adam Sasser (.409-2-3) and junior OF Will Campbell (.333-2-3). Campbell hit .455 in helping Georgia win a road series over Ga. Southern last weekend. Sophomore C Michael Curry leads the team with 8 RBI while freshman 3B Aaron Schunk is next with seven.
