The Georgia baseball team posted a 6-3 win over Charlotte to gain a split in the series Wednesday at Hayes Stadium.
 
 
Freshman left-hander Kevin Smith (2-0) pitched a career-high 7.2 innings, scattering three runs on six hits with five strikeouts for his second career win. Junior right-hander Drew Moody came on to record the final four outs for the Bulldogs.
 
 
Georgia (9-5) took a 3-0 lead in the third. The Bulldogs loaded the bases on singles by Mitchell Webb and Skyler Weber (2-for-3, 2 RBI) plus a walk to Trey Logan. Weber extended his hitting streak to nine games, tying his career best. With one out, senior Daniel Nichols bounced one to shortstop Hunter Jones who misplayed it, and it rolled in to centerfield, allowing two runs to score. Charlotte starter J.D. Prochaska hit the next two Bulldogs including Keegan McGovern who picked up an RBI. In the fourth, Georgia pushed two more runs across as Logan and Weber collected RBI to build a 5-0 edge.
 
 
“Kevin was really good for us today, he threw a lot of strikes and got a lot of first pitch outs,” Georgia’s Ike Cousins head baseball coach Scott Stricklin said. “His ball has a lot of life on it, it runs away from the hitters, and he pitched well. Defensively, we made some plays out there. Trey Logan is our utility infielder, and he’s fun to watch. He is always diving around out there and making plays, and you have to give those guys some at bats. On the play in the eighth, we talked to our freshmen first baseman about a runner at second and a close play at first, that runner is coming home so don’t worry about a call at first, fire it home, and Patrick did that today and we got the out. It was a heads up play.”
 
 
Prochaska allowed four runs on two hits in three innings to drop to 1-3. The 49ers (6-7) spoiled Smith’s shutout bid in the sixth when first baseman Logan Sherrer hit his fourth home run of the year and second of the series. Also, Charlotte added a run in the seventh on a wild pitch that made it 6-2.
 
 
The Bulldogs return to action Friday at Foley Field for the start of a three-game series with Lipscomb (9-4). First pitch is slated for 6:05 p.m.
