College Baseball: Georgia upsets Mississippi State 11-8 on Saturday in front of a crowd of 7,512 at Polk-Dement Stadium Saturday that witnessed the longest regulation game in school history. State was ranked tenth nationally and came into Saturday’s game 17-6-1 on the year and 4-1 in the SEC.
 
 
The game took four hours and 52 minutes, a record for a nine-inning game for both schools, and when it was over, Georgia had snapped a five-game losing streak to improve to 15-10 overall and 2-4 in the SEC. Meanwhile, State dropped to 17-7-1 (4-2 SEC). Georgia’s longest game ever was a 16-inning affair that took four hours and 56 minutes in 2012.
 
 
On Saturday, Georgia trailed 4-2 going to the fifth when they tied the game with two swings courtesy of junior Trevor Kieboom and then freshman LJ Talley, who had a career-high five RBI. The pair smacked their first home runs of the season to make it 4-all. State answered with a run in the bottom of the frame and Georgia tied it at 5-all with a sacrifice fly from junior Keegan McGovern, scoring Stephen Wrenn. Both teams had numerous early scoring opportunities as each squad left seven men on through the first three innings. At that point, State had a 2-1 advantage and then an RBI-double by Georgia’s Skyler Weber tied it at 2-all in the fourth. State responded when Reid Humphreys made it 4-2 with a two-run double in the bottom of the inning.
 
 
In the seventh, freshman Logan Moody made a home-run saving catch up against the right field wall on a ball hit by John Holland that kept it a tie game. Then in the eighth, Georgia reclaimed its advantage on a bases-loaded walk to Talley. Moody provided a bit of a cushion when he followed with a two-run single to make it 8-5. The Bulldogs added three runs on four hits in the ninth, highlighted by a a two-run double by Talley to give him a career-high five on the day.
 
 
“We found a way to get some toughness after the third inning when I called them up and let them have it,” Georgia’s Ike Cousins head baseball coach Scott Stricklin said. “I said we need to find some heart, we’re down 4-2 and playing the worst baseball. Bo (Tucker) went out there and did a great job on the mound and was the star of the game for me, and our hitters came through too. It’s early in the season, but we need a win badly today.”
 
 
Both teams used an array of pitchers, and Bulldog sophomore reliever Bo Tucker (3-1) emerged with a victory, going 4.1 innings and allowing one run on four hits with two strikeouts. Heath Holder started for Georgia and went two innings while Connor Jones followed for 1.1 innings before Tucker got the call. State employed seven hurlers and junior Daniel Brown got the loss to fall to 2-2. After State rallied for three runs off freshman Blakely Brown in the ninth, sophomore Blake Cairens came on to record the final three outs for his first save as a Bulldog.
 
 
Georgia returns home and will play host to Kennesaw State Tuesday. First pitch at Foley Field will be at 6:04 p.m., and the game will be available on SEC Network+ and the Georgia Bulldogs Sports Network from IMG.
