University of Georgia junior baseball standout Michael Curry will receive the Jason Varitek Award for the Most Outstanding Scholar-Athlete in Georgia from the Atlanta 400 Baseball Fan Club Saturday in Atlanta.

Curry was chosen for the award by the organization that supports baseball at all levels. A non-profit group that has supported the Atlanta Braves since 1965, they also have provided scholarships and awards for college players in the state as well as recognized minor and major league players in the Braves organization at their annual banquet held at the Atlanta Marriott Northwest at Galleria Hotel.

A computer science major, Curry earned All-Southeastern Conference honors as well as Academic All-SEC recognition in 2017. At the end of the regular season, the 5-11, 212-pound native of Gainesville, Ga., ranked among the SEC leaders in home runs and RBI. Curry started all 57 games and helped guide the Bulldogs to the SEC Tournament. He batted .297 with 10 home runs and 46 RBI to earn the team’s Gordon Beckham MVP Award.

The Bulldogs resume team practice Jan. 26. The 2018 baseball season opens Feb. 16 as the Bulldogs play host to Georgia Southern in a three-game series at Foley Field. Ike Cousins head baseball coach Scott Stricklin is in his fifth season leading the Bulldogs. Georgia return 26 veterans including all nine starting position players and a majority of the pitching staff from the 2017 club.
