Third-ranked Georgia will face Georgia Southern at Foley Field Tuesday with first pitch slated for 5:02 p.m (SECN+).
At 11-1, the Bulldogs are off to their best start since 2009 when they began the year 14-0. The Bulldogs are coming off their third sweep of No. 17 Ga. Tech in the past four years under Ike Cousins head coach Scott Stricklin. Up next, the Bulldogs face the Eagles (5-5) in a two-game set (Wednesday’s contest will be at SRP Park in N. Augusta, S.C.) and then UMASS (1-5) for a three-game series starting Friday in Athens. After going 4-0 last week, Georgia moved up to No. 3 in the USA Today Coaches Top 25 poll and to No. 4 in Collegiate Baseball, Baseball America and D1Baseball.com top 25 rankings.
The Bulldogs lead the all-time series against the Eagles 55-38-1 including winning a series 2-1 in Statesboro last year (W 3-1, W 4-2, L-10-7). Georgia is 2-0 in games at SRP Park, posting wins over No. 8 Clemson (6-3 in 2018) and The Citadel (9-0 in 2019). The Bulldogs and Eagles will meet again for a single game in Statesboro on March 11. Georgia has never faced UMASS.
Last weekend, Georgia swept the Yellow Jackets, winning 6-5 in Athens, 12-0 in Atlanta and 9-3 at Coolray Field, the Triple-A home of the Gwinnett Stripers in the Atlanta Braves organization. Proceeds of Sunday’s game benefitted Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA) as this was the 18th annual Farmview Market Spring Baseball Classic For Kids. All three games were sellouts. This was the first three-game consecutive weekend series during the regular season with Tech in 61 years.
Redshirt freshman RHP Garrett Brown (1-0, 3.00 ERA) gets the start Tuesday, his third midweek start of the year. Last Tuesday, he picked up his first career win, beating Kennesaw State (5IP, 3H, 1R, 2BB, 8K). GSU will counter with senior RHP Tyler Owens (0-0, 0.00 ERA). GSU won a series over Radford last week.
Redshirt junior OF/LHP Tucker Bradley (.447-6-19; 0-0, 0.00 ERA, 1 SV) has enjoyed one of the hottest starts in the country. He leads the SEC in home runs, RBI, total bases and is second in hits, batting, stolen bases, and slugging percentage. Bradley has reached base in all 12 games this year. Also, he has made two relief appearances for a total of 3.1 scoreless innings with five strikeouts. In four games last week, Bradley hit .412 (7-for-17) with eight runs scored, one double, three home runs and nine RBI to earn SEC Player of the Week honors Monday. Senior SS Cam Shepherd (.277-4-18) ranks second in the league in RBI and third in stolen bases. Sophomore OF Ben Anderson (.432-0-11) is tied for first in the SEC in runs scored with 19. Anderson has a seven-game hitting streak, a team-high five doubles, 11 walks and ranks second on the club in batting.
Sophomore RHP Cole Wilcox (2-0, 2.00 ERA, 26 Ks, 2BB, 18 IP) was brilliant in a combined shutout of #17 Ga. Tech in Atlanta last Saturday. He tossed seven innings and posted a career-high 11 strikeouts, allowing just three hits and no walks. Senior Justin Glover took care of the final two innings. It was the first shutout of Tech on their campus since 1964. For his efforts, Wilcox was named the SEC Co-Pitcher of the Week by the league Monday.
