Ben Cleveland made his media debut this week. The redshirt sophomore talked about various topics, from not being as famous as Jake Fromm to special teams and how that helped him get better.
Cleveland quickly pointed out that special teams are one of the most important aspects of a team. All camp long, various players along with Kirby Smart stress the importance of special teams. The offensive guard started out on the special teams unit line. He eventually earned a starting spot on the offensive line as a right guard. However, it all started with special teams.
“Special teams are one of the biggest parts of our team, you know. That was one of the biggest differences between Coach Smart’s first year and his second year here, the difference in special teams,” Cleveland said. “Guys buying into it, wanting to be a part of it. So, I feel like guys continue to buy into that more and more every single day, and it’s going to do nothing but make us better.’’
Smart often mentions buying into the program will end in success. It seems that Cleveland and many others have already bought into the program and understand the importance of it. He mentions everyone’s competing to get on the bus, and that appears to be the motivation of the season, to make that roster that travels.
“Everybody is fighting to try to get on the bus,” Cleveland stated. “So I think everybody’s trying to become a better person on the field, off the field, every day, and I think that’s very similar to how we were last year. I think that’s how it will continue to be.”
