BIG HAIRY BLAWG: Sporting adventures

While I used to attend as many games (almost every) as possible in person, I thoroughly enjoy mixing it up with more variety these days.

I have a nice television and the coverage is so much better than it used to be, so I was perfectly content watching Georgia edge Notre Dame 20-19 and saving a few stacks. The house was diehard Dawgs only, three alumni and a probable-future-little-alum dressed in the CANINES vs. CATHOLICS shirts I had made, eating chili and drinking American canned beer. It was good times.

Rolled my friend Jerry’s wheelchair in through the tight confines of my foyer for this last game, which was a fun hang and a very rewarding win in my opinion, our first real blowout of a team in a remarkable two full calendar years.

I was up in Athens for the opener, starting at the Taco Stand and tailgating at Old College with my dude Merv (from the article “On Memphis”). Hit the Georgia Theatre, where they play the Dawgs on the big screen but were broadcasting Tommy Tuberville’s bad TV call over the PA – it used to be Larry Munson there. Went to basically half the bars in Athens – which is way too many – before I took the MegaBus back to the city…pretty toasted.

And, this week I’m flying to San Diego to see Beck open for U2 on Friday and then watching the Georgia game with the San Diego chapter of our alumni association, which should be special.

Then, it’s time for Rocky Top from my house again – heck I’m having a gathering. Mizzou I will watch in Sanford with my wife and daughter, after another Old College tailgate. South Carolina in person with my alumni brother Johnny. Trey Shelton and I are scheming another bar party that weekend in Athens, too.

Vandy in Nashville and Georgia-Florida in Jacksonville and Tech in my ATL, each a cocktail party, of sorts, one THE Cocktail Party – we must win this year.

I’d love to attend the SEC title tilt for a third time, would hit either the Rose Bowl or Sugar Bowl, count me in for the National Championship game. I can get there by train…I’d happily go to any bowl game, actually.

Anyway, it’s SEC football season, and I love America and the Dawgs. Thought I’d share that. Keep your eyes open for my culture reporting, from the road.
