The Dawgs barely scraped away with this win leaving Jordan Hare with a one score win over the Auburn Tigers. In a match where you couldn’t define a clear winner until the very end, Georgia fans were able to witness the Dawg’s offense take what almost felt like the entire game to wake up scoring only 10 points in the first half and 27 total.
Over the span of the matchup, Georgia struggled to run the ball averaging 3.6 yards a carry. The lack of depth at that position was evident. It was practically Daijun Edwards against the world with his 19 carries. The next guy up was Dillon Bell with 4. You don’t see the Dawgs ever try to lean one guy in the backfield. Kendall Milton dressed out to play, but only came in on occasion, and he never wound up having any rushing attempts.
Auburn’s defensive front was stout up the middle, and was quick to clog runs. Without a proper running game, Georgia had a hard time finding rhythm and the lack of points on the board was evident to that. Again, it wasn’t until the fourth quarter, that it felt like the Dawgs were finally taking over.
The Dawgs took the first half to find their sea legs it seems. In the first and second quarters, Carson Beck threw for a total of 77 yards leading the offense to score 10 points (all of which came in the second quarter). As the game progressed, Beck turned it up a notch. In the third quarter he surpassed his yardage from the whole first half with 88 yards and a touchdown, and in the fourth Beck went off throwing for 148 and a touchdown with a majority of those fourth quarter yards going to one and only Brock Bowers.
It’s been five weeks of Georgia football, and there’s plenty we don’t know about the offense. It feels weird with their slow starts, and strong finishes, but if there’s one thing that’s for sure going to ring the bell every time, it’s Brock Bowers.
Like the rest of the team Bowers took the whole game it seems to heat up. In the first half he had only 9 yards, and in the third quarter he was only able to contribute 27. It wasn’t until the fourth and final quarter that Bowers was able to go off putting up 121 receiving yards and a touchdown off of just 4 receptions.
Bowers was getting it done in every way imaginable once the ball was in his hands breaking tackles and running through defenders at every given opportunity. It was his 40-yard touchdown that gave the Dawgs their 27-20 lead and eventually their win. A true Heisman moment for the third year out of Napa, California.
In his postgame presser Coach Kirby Smart admitted that he doesn’t know how good his team is as a whole, but regardless of how they perform as a group Brock Bowers has shown us yet again that he truly is special. He single-handedly dug Georgia out of a hole yesterday. He finished the day with 8 receptions, 157 yards, and a touchdown and is now tied with A.J. Green for having the second most career receiving touchdowns in UGA history.
