Seniors, Brandie Jay and Brittany Rogers were named NCAA Individual Champions after recording the highest score on vault and bars, respectively, among all participants in the NCAA semifinals.
“I’m so proud of them,” said Georgia head coach Danna Durante. “They have both worked incredibly hard. They’ve both been very unselfish for this team, so to see them cap off their senior year with not only making Super Six but being national champions in both of their favorite events it’s incredibly exciting and a great way to finish their careers.”
A native of Fort Collins, Colorado, Jay posted a 9.95 on vault to lead the Gymdogs to a team score of 49.275. Jay was alone at the top of the event during the first session, but she was tied in the evening meet by Alabama’s Katie Bailey.
“It’s really exciting,” said Jay. “It’s really indescribable because you work so hard and here at Nationals to hit your stride and hit that moment – it’s irreplaceable.”
A Canadian Olympian, Rogers rose to the occasion on bars with a 9.95 of her own, tying Florida’s Bridget Sloan for the best score in the event. Rogers anchored Georgia’s lineup as the Gymdogs pulled away in their final rotation to advance to the Super Six.
“It’s pretty self-explanatory that I’m super excited about coming out on top on bars,” said Rogers. “It’s my favorite event, so winning my favorite event is definitely icing on the cake. It’s an incredible honor to do it with the team behind you and the team moving on to Super Six.”
The championships were Georgia’s 41st and 42nd individual crowns in program history, and Jay and Rogers became the 19th and 20th Gymdogs to claim an individual title. This was the first time since 2008 that multiple Gymdogs were named individual champions.
“There are so many amazing gymnasts that came before this team,” added Durante. “For these guys to add to that tradition and that success and that history is phenomenal. I’m excited to put new names on that national champion wall.”
Georgia will return to action on Saturday at nine p.m. ET as it battles for a team title in this year’s Super Six.
