Five-star defensive end Brenton Cox is one of the few true freshmen on defense who has contributed significantly for Georgia.
Cox was a standout in fall camp and received loads of attention and love from the coaches. Kirby mentioned during fall camp that he was one of the incoming guys who was the most physically ready to play.
As Georgia gets into the thick of its schedule, the emergence of his presence would add a whole new arsenal to the defense.
While the Bulldogs haven’t recorded any sacks thus far, Cox specialty is pass rushing and its only a matter of time before Georgia reaps the benefits.
‘’Brenton has grown and progressed,” Smart said. “He probably hasn’t shown up in games as much as he has in practice. I just don’t think he’s had many opportunities to get out there and flash and do what I think he can do. He’s played really hard. He’s played physical. He’s very conscientious about his assignments and learning those.”
The game this weekend against Missouri is once again another pass-heavy team so Cox should have an abundance of opportunities to rush the passer.
By the time the Bulldogs get late into the season, Brenton Cox is a name that will most likely be known to Bulldog nation. Although only a true freshman, Cox is more than capable of having a major impact on this defense.
“Brenton just has to continue to grow up and mature,” Smart said. “I’m hoping that a lot of these freshmen, who have played in three games now, can start to have a little confidence where they get over the butterflies and anxiety, so they can go play. He’s getting better with each and every game.’’
