What’s been fun for me is to see some of the young guys step up for sure. I think Malcolm has had a really good camp. Reggie Davis certainly. Isaiah McKenzie had a great spring.

Is there a number count? No. Again, we do know there are some young guys we are counting on; that need to come in and pick up what we’re doing, make plays. Obviously guys have done that. But in terms of numbers, luckily for us, we’ve got tight ends we can use.

We want to keep people off balance with multiple personnel groupings whether it’s tight ends, receivers, running backs. Whatever it is, we are going make people prepare for a lot of different looks.

It’s as fast as I’ve ever been around. These guys are obviously used to it. It’s pretty impressive to tell you the truth. I’m very pleased with it…We’ve got some tempo packages we like, and when we go tempo, we go pretty fast.

[su_spacer size=”40″] Coach Schottenheimer is asked about freshmen wide receivers Michael Chigbu and Terry Godwin:

Terry is obviously a terrific player. Very good playmaker. I think he’s a guy that’s picked up the system really well. Picked it up very fast. We are asking him to do quite a bit and moving him around to different sports, which is a compliment to him.

Michael is a big, powerful guy. He’s the body type you like. He can win matchups because he is strong and physical guy, very good catching radius.

They’ve done a good job, but so has Jayson Stanley and Shaquery. All the guys have had their moments. Again, we still got some time to evaluate them. We’ve told them from day one, we expect them to come in to compete and help win games.

[su_spacer size=”40″] Coach Schottenheimer is asked about the tight ends Jeb Blazevich, Jordan Davis, Jackson Harris and Jay Rome and if all 4 could see action:

I would hope that’s the case. We want to have a lot of personnel groupings in there. If you are playing at a fast tempo, guys are going to need a few blows. Those 4 guys have probably, arguably the best camp of everybody and have done a real good job. From Jay Rome all the way down to Jordan Davis, all those guys have done a very good job. We like tight ends here . We like to use them in different way to keep people off balance by putting them in different spots.

[su_spacer size=”40″] What sticks out to me is Coach Schottenheimer’s comment about the up-tempo offense when he says “we go pretty fast” and “it’s the fastest I’ve been around.” Couple that with what we’ve heard from players like running back who has also stated that the tempo of the offense is even faster than it was last year, and I am curious to see just how fast they are going to go. It also sounds like the tight ends are going to get a lot of work, which we had expected based on what we know about Brian Schottenheimer as an offensive coordinator.
[su_spacer size=”40″] It also appears that Terry Godwin is practicing and playing his way into a start one of the WR spots come game day, and another freshman WR, Michael Chigbu, could also see significant playing time. In fact, it would not be surprising to see a number of players see playing time based on the comments of how fast they are expecting to go on offense when going up-tempo.
