Satellite camps are all the rage and Brunswick High School is holding one this morning that will feature campers from Southeast Georgia and Northeast Florida.
 
 

Brunswick High head coach Larry Harold always admired the satellite camp concept, but he never thought the Pirates would host one. After the proposal from some assistants, Harold reached out to Georgia offensive line coach Sam Pittman — who ran the idea by Kirby Smart — and the first steps of the Golden Isles Satellite Exposure Camp were complete, and the school’s camp was set in motion.
 
“Originally, I wasn’t going to do it. Once I saw how big the one in Cedar Grove was, I was like, ‘We’ve got to do this,’” Harold said. “No one in southeast Georgia was doing it. Once (UGA) agreed, we started talking to other coaches.”
On Wednesday, high school football players, ranging from Savannah to Jacksonville, will gather at Brunswick High for a day of hands-on training with college football coaches from across the nation.
 
Georgia’s coaches will headline the event, and the Bulldogs staff provided a stipulation with Harold that they be the only SEC coaches in attendance.
Harold obliged, of course, and has since reached out to members of the Mercer, Ohio and Central Florida staffs, who will attend the camp.
“The first thing is relationships. You can reach out to coaches,” Harold said. “Once you do that, it’s a matter of communication and getting the information out so kids will come.”
