In a weekend of some stellar high school football title games in the state of Georgia, the 2016 GHSA Football State Championships concluded with the Class 7A title game of titanic proportions as two nationally ranked squads, two number one seeds and region champs faced off in the Dome. The 4th ranked Grayson Rams versus the 10th ranked Roswell Hornets, according to MaxPreps Excellent 25 rankings, fought to a 20-20 tie at the end of regulation to send the game to overtime.
After Grayson took a 7-point lead late in the fourth quarter, Roswell came roaring back to tie the game up 20 all on the final play in regulation, a play similar to last year’s Class 6A title game which pitted these two Peach State powerhouses against one another, but in that contest, Roswell stole the game from Grayson to win 30-26. Would Grayson fight so hard only to come up short again? Not this time, as the field goal kickers from each team would decide the outcome with the Rams’ kicker making his attempt while the Hornets’ kicker pulled his wide right, and Grayson celebrated a 23-20 overtime victory to take home the championship trophy.
