Bulldawg Illustrated is counting down the days till the Dawgs kickoff their college football season in Bulldawgs Countdown to Kickoff 2015, and we are down to number 27 Nick Chubb.
[su_spacer size=”20″] Nick Chubb exploded onto the scene as a freshman at tailback for the Georgia Bulldawgs last year rushing for 1,547 yards on the ground and 14 touchdowns, and he did so only starting 8 games; although he did play in all 13 of UGA’s games in 2014. The sensational back hails from Cedartown, Georgia where he played varsity football for coach Scott Hendrix and graduated from Cedartown high school. Chubb is a member of Georgia’s 2014 recruiting class.
[su_spacer size=”40″] How good was Chubb’s freshman performance? It ranks as the4th all time best rushing total in school history tying him with Garrison Hearst. The only Bulldawg running back ahead of Chubb and Hearst on the list is the legendary number 34, Herschel Walker, who owns the 3 best single season rushing performances in school history. It is also the 15th best single season rushing total in the Southeastern Conference since 1956. Chubb’s performance was second only to Walker for a freshman running back in school history.
[su_spacer size=”40″] The other amazing fact about Nick Chubb’s rushing total is he gained those 1,547 yards on just 219 carries, which means he averaged 7.1 yards per carry. That average breaks Rodney Hampton’s school record which has stood since 1987 and lands him 17th best all time in the SEC … since 1956. It also breaks Garrison Hearst’s 1992 school record for average gain per rush in a season with a minimum of 200 carries.
[su_spacer size=”40″] He had 8 straight games where he rushed for at least 100 yards or more; the first UGA running back to perform such a feat since Herschel Walker. In addition, Chubb also had 2 games where he rushed for 200 yards or more, one of which was in the Belk Bowl versus Louisville. In that game, Chubb set both a bowl and a SEC conference record for rushing for 266 yards on 33 carries against the Cardinals, and it was also the second best rushing performance in a game in school history; 2nd only to Herschel Walker’s 283 yard performance versus Vanderbilt in 1980. Consequently, that performance earned Chubb the MVP for the Belk Bowl.
