Bulldawg Illustrated is counting down the days till the Dawgs kickoff their college football season in Bulldawgs Countdown to Kickoff 2015, and we have crossed the 30 barrier, down to number 29 – Jarvis Jones.
[su_spacer size=”20″] Jarvis Jones is a graduate of Carver high school from the Columbus, GA area where he played varsity football for coach Dell McGee. Jones was part of the 2009 college football recruiting class and was an AJC Super 11, ESPN 150, Sporting News Elite 100, Super Elite 50, Super Prep All-American, and Columbus Ledger-Enquirer All-City Defensive Senior MVP high school player. Highly recruited, Jones ended up going across the US to the west coast to sign and play for the Southern California Trojans.
[su_spacer size=”40″] However, the Georgia native was injured during his freshman year with the Trojans, and USC’s staff would not clear him to play medically; so, he sought a second opinion and to transfer. Call it fate or destiny, but Jones would find his way back home to the Peach State and to UGA, transferring to Georgia in 2010.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Per NCAA rules, Jones had to sit out the 2010 season, but when he got the chance to take to the field again in 2011, he did so with a vengeance. During his redshirt sophomore campaign in ’11, Jones started 14 games and terrorized opposing QBs with 49 QB pressures and 13.5 sacks. His performance was a first team All-American one as he was named by the AFCA, Associated Press, ESPN, FWAA, Walter Camp, Phil Steele and Sports Illustrated. He was also named first team All-SEC by the Associated Press, ESPN.com, Phil Steele and the SEC Coaches.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Jones returned for his junior season in 2012 and continued where he left off in 2011. The outside linebacker was again a constant presence in the opponent’s backfield making play after play, starting 12 games for the Dawgs. He finished the season with 14.5 sacks, which set a new school record at Georgia for most sacks in a season topping previous record holder David Pollack by a half of a sack. Jones also broke 2002 Pollack’s school record for tackles for loss with 24.5. Jones again was named a first team All-American and All-SEC.
[su_spacer size=”40″] During Jarvis Jones’ collegiate career as a Georgia Bulldawg outside linebacker from 2011-2012, he amassed 28 sacks, 44.5 tackles for loss, 88 QB pressure, and 155 total tackles along with 9 forced fumbles and 2 fumble recoveries. Number 29 would literally take over a game. Just ask the Florida Gators and Will Muschamp as well as the Missouri Tigers, who were happy to see Jones declare for the NFL draft after the 2012 season.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Jarvis Jones Career Highlights[su_spacer size=”40″] The Bulldawg linebacker was picked 17th overall in the first round in the 2013 NFL Draft by the Pittsburg Steelers. He played in 14 games for the Steelers during his rookie season, but unfortunately was injured last year in the Steelers’ third game of the 2014 season versus the Carolina Panthers. He is good to go for his 3rd season as Pro with the Steelers after having surgery to repair his wrist injury and having a successful rehab. This Bulldawg fan will be watching for him to make plays for the Steelers in 2015. [su_spacer size=”40″] Jarvis Jones Bio – Georgia Official Athletic Site
