[su_spacer size=”20″] Georgia’s track and field teams garnered a pair of SEC indoor end of the year awards with the NCAA Championships arriving this week, according to a league announcement.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Junior Maicel Uibo has been named the SEC Men’s Scholar Athlete of the Year while Keturah Orji has earned the SEC Women’s Freshman Field Athlete of the Year honors.
[su_spacer size=”40″] This marks the second straight Scholar Athlete of the Year honors for the Bulldogs after Brandon Lord earned the 2014 award.  Sophomore Kendell Williams swept the indoor and outdoor Women’s Freshman Field Athlete of the Year for the Georgia women last year.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Uibo has also been outstanding in the classroom.  Posting a 3.38 cumulative GPA in Finance, Uibo has been a two-time SEC Academic Honor Roll selection and on the Director’s Honor Roll selection.
[su_spacer size=”40″] For his career, Uibo recently finished in the top three in the heptathlon at the SEC Indoor Championships for the third straight year, including his 2014 SEC victory.  He also won the 2014 NCAA decathlon title, finished with runner-up honors in the heptathlon at the 2014 NCAA Indoor Championships and scored a school record 6,044 points (No. 8 collegiate performer all-time, No. 11 performance all-time).  Uibo established a school decathlon record with 8,223 points (No. 10 collegiate performer all-time, No. 13 performance all-time) at 2013 Bulldog Decathlon and finished fifth or better all four of his NCAA Championship opportunities so far.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Orji, a native of Mount Olive, N.J., scored the fifth-most points with 16 of any woman at SEC Championships (No. 1 freshman, one of only two underclassmen in top-10).  She won the SEC triple jump title and finished third in the long jump finals.  Orji owns the triple jump national leading mark of 45 feet, 10 ½ inches (No. 9 collegiate all-time performer, No. 11 on all-time list), which is an American Junior and a school record.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Orji owns nine out of 10 U.S. Junior all-time indoor marks and six out of 10 U.S. Junior total marks before competing in any outdoor meets as a freshman yet.  She also stands sixth on national list in the long jump (21-2).  Orji has won four out of six meets this year, including all three in the triple jump.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Uibo and Orji join 11 teammates this week at the NCAA Championships in Fayetteville, Ark.  Action starts on Friday and continues through Saturday evening.
