Head coach Kirby Smart has made it clear almost every week that his team has to tackle better and with two games remaining he is still looking for some improvement from his defense.

 

Coming off the Bulldogs first loss of the season, there seemed to be a large amount of emphasis on fundamentals in the team’s practice on Monday and improving on tackling is one area that the team is really turning their focus.

The Bulldogs still have a great chance at a potential playoff spot and finishing out the season strong, but Smart knows that they will have to tackle better.

“Every football game comes down to blocking and tackling because we all got plays,” said Smart. “Who is going to block and tackle better?”

Smart knows that whatever team tackles better will most likely walk away with the victory, but with only one loss on the team’s record that does not mean the coach Smart has been pleased with his team’s tackling so far this season.

“I think I mentioned I haven’t been happy with the tackling the entire time,” said Smart. There’s not been a day that I’ve been really happy with our tackling. There’s been some games that I’ve been more pleased than others but not practice. We have to continue to work on it and players have to hold each other accountable.”

After allowing 488 yards of offense to the opposition, the Bulldogs clearly have some improvements to make on their defense, which has been formidable for the majority of this season.

The defensive focus now shifts to the Kentucky Wildcats and sound tackling on mobile quarterback Stephen Johnson and the SEC’s number two overall rusher in Benny Snell Jr., which could be the difference in a Bulldogs win or loss in the final home game of the season.
