Bulldogs To Watch – Georgia vs. Kentucky

Glenn Schumann (Defensive Coordinator) – After dominant defensive performances against Clemson and Tennessee Tech, Schumann leads his squad into Kroger Field for the first SEC clash of the season. The last two trips to Lexington, the Bulldogs have escaped the Bluegrass State with wins despite scoring just 14 points in 2020 and 16 points in 2022. With the stakes high for Stoops trying to finally beat Georgia, Coach Smart will need Schumann’s help in scheming yet another defensive game to perfection to limit the Wildcats’ explosive plays and to keep the crowd noise to a minimum.

Carson Beck (QB #15) – Beck continues his Heisman campaign in his first of many challenging road SEC matchups against a Kentucky defense that only allowed 166 passing yards in last week’s home loss to South Carolina. This will be the first true road game for the new-look Georgia offense, and while most think Georgia has the clear upper hand, Kentucky’s fans and players will certainly be full of energy ahead of their much anticipated matchup with the No. 1 team in the country. Beck will need to keep being the calm, cool, and collected captain that he is to keep his unit sharp throughout the game.

Arian Smith (WR #11) – In road games, especially in the SEC, explosive passing plays can be the difference maker for visiting teams. For Georgia, there is no better player for that in the passing game than Arian Smith. One of his more memorable games was the 2022 Peach Bowl where he caught for 129 yards with an average of 43 yards per catch. As of this season, his most explosive play was a 50-yard touchdown against Tennessee Tech. If Smith can find holes deep in Kentucky’s secondary, he can make the necessary plays for the Bulldogs to put fast points on the scoreboard.

Anthony Evans III (WR #5) – While Evans III will not see much playing time offensively, he has potential to be a difference maker in the kicking game. In last week’s matchup with Tennessee Tech, he showcased his breakoff abilities with a 46 yard punt return with 62 total yards. With a dangerous player back deep on kicks, the Bulldogs have the ability to flip the field if the defense can keep the Wildcats contained.

Malaki Starks (DB #24) – After yet another insane interception in a season opener, Starks and his defense head to Lexington to face off against former Georgia quarterback Brock Vandagriff, who has not looked his best in his first two games, which seems to set Starks up for an amazing evening in Lexington. Look for him to be a force to be reckoned with in the secondary and maybe even get his first touchdown in a Bulldogs uniform.

Jalon Walker (LB #11) – Pointing back to Vandagriff’s struggles as of late, an aggressive pass rush led by Walker who already has nine tackles and 1.5 sacks on the year could be just what the Dawgs need to do. If Walker and Co. can put the new Wildcats quarterback on the ground play after play, even if it is not necessarily a sack, Stoops’ offense will certainly crumble, as will their chances of pulling off a monumental upset.

Peyton Woodring (K #91) – The Bulldogs kicker is 4-for-4 on the season including a career-long 55 yard field goal against Clemson in week one. With the high possibility of a low scoring, defensive ball game, Woodring’s strong and accurate leg could prove to be huge for Georgia’s offense if they find troubles moving the ball once they find themselves in Kentucky territory.

All-American Bulldog great Rex Robinson made one of his most famous field goals to complete a 17-16 comeback victory over Kentucky in Lexington in 1978, with Larry Munson at his finest.

The Bulldogs 1980 national champions beat Kentucky 27-0, a week after shutting out Vanderbilt 41-0, with Buck Belue hitting Amp Arnold for a 90-yard touchdown to ice the win.

All-SEC safety Kirby Smart had two of his finest games against Kentucky, intercepting future No. 1 overall pick Time Couch twice in both 1997 and 1998 Bulldog victories over Kentucky.
