This Saturday, who are the Bulldogs to watch in Georgia’s second ever meeting with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish?
TERRY GODWIN (WR, No. 5)
The Bulldogs’ leading returning wideout from last season, Godwin’s performance in South Bend, Ind. Saturday night could be key in Georgia upending the Fighting Irish. No question, the Notre Dame defense will be geared to slow down Nick Chubb, Sony Michel and the Bulldog running attack so Godwin and the rest of the receiving corps must work open and be sure-handed when Jake Fromm delivers the football, thus providing the offense the balance it will need to win this game.
DOMINICK SANDERS (SAF, No. 24)
Georgia’s senior leader in the secondary, Sanders should be on passing alert Saturday evening, what with the Irish’s new starting quarterback, Brandon Wimbush, ready to unleash his strong arm against the Bulldogs’ defense. A pick or two by Sanders would be huge in this much bally-hooed game and move him even closer to becoming Georgia’s all-time career interception leader.
ISAIAH WYNN (OT, No. 77)
The Bulldogs’ much-talked-about offensive line will be in the spotlight at Notre Dame’s stadium Saturday evening. Not only will several of the Bulldogs up front be making their first road start but they will be doing so in one of the most hallowed environments in college football. That said, can the Georgia O-line create the space so as to allow Chubb and Michel to prove unstoppable for the ND defense? Wynn, the Bulldogs’ senior leader at left tackle, with his leadership and blocking ability, will be the key to making that happen.
KIRBY SMART (HEAD COACH)
Saturday night’s battle with the Irish could well be a defining one for Georgia’s second-year head coach. Win this tough road tilt against a Notre Dame team that will be highly motivated for the Bulldogs while attempting to erase the memory of last season’s poor 4-8 Irish finish and Smart will have the Dawgs off and running at 2-0, thus making the 2017 road ahead appear much brighter.
In the 1980 win over Notre Dame:
SENIOR DBS SHINED – Scott Woerner had two interceptions, Chris Welton recovered a fumble, Mike Fisher had a pick and Bob Kelly recovered the misplayed kickoff.
HERSCHEL WALKER ran for 150 yards in the 17-10 win over the Irish, the first time all season that Notre Dame had allowed a back to run for over 100.
TERRY HOAGE, who had the critical field goal block, made his college football debut in the national championship clinching victory over the Irish.
