Bulldogs to Watch

Georgia, fresh off a defensive performance against Auburn that would make Erk Russell smile and light up a celebratory cigar, are set to host the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns. Will there be a letdown after such a big win? Could be, but I don’t think so. Here are some Bulldogs to watch in this one on Saturday.

REGGIE CARTER (ILB, #45)

This 6-1, 230-pound junior has alternated at the inside linebacker spot with Natrez Patrick and Roquan Smith this season. Carter brings vital playing experience to the position and in the early win over Nicholls, he matched his career high with seven tackles (one TFL). Carter also had six assisted tackles in the loss to Florida and then came back with a best-yet eight tackles in the win over Kentucky. Carter, along with fellow linebackers Smith and Patrick, has helped the Bulldog defense to make steady improvement throughout the season and will be counted on in the final two outings against UL-Lafayette and Georgia Tech, as well as the Bulldogs’ bowl appearance.

JAVON WIMS (WR, #6)

Wims, after transferring to Georgia from Hinds Community College in Mississippi, has really made strides in the Bulldogs’ receiving corps. A 6-4, 220-pound junior, he gives quarterback Jacob Eason a big target and Wims’ size certainly paid off in the 27-24 win over Kentucky when he led the UGA receivers with five catches for 90 yards, including a 51-yard reception from Eason. “I think he’s been progressing throughout the year,” said head coach Kirby Smart. “I mean, he and Jacob are gaining a rapport with each other that helps and that will only grow over time. He’s gotten better each week.”

JULIAN ROCHESTER (DT, #5)

As a mere freshman, the 6-5, 316-pound Rochester has already become a stable in the defensive line for the Bulldogs. After recording a career-best seven tackles in Georgia’s loss to Florida, the McEachern High product from Powder Springs bettered that performance in the win over Kentucky, making a career-high eight tackles to share team-high honors with Reggie Carter. With strength and quickness off the ball, Rochester will be expected to step up his game even more, especially in two weeks when the Bulldog defense goes against rival Georgia Tech and the Jackets’ potent triple-option running attack.

BRICE RAMSEY (P, QB, #12)

Although Ramsey hasn’t seen the field much at quarterback as a redshirt junior, the Camden County product has now become a vital ingredient of the team as a punter. When freshman punter Marshall Long suffered a season-ending knee injury in the week of practice prior to the Auburn game, Ramsey moved into the starting role as Georgia’s punter.

And although the 6-3, 210-pound Ramsey, who was rated a four-star quarterback prospect in high school, averaged just 33.7 yards on six punts, many of his kicks were positional punts designed to back the Tiger offense up near its own goal line. Ramsey responded by kicking Auburn dead three times inside the 20 … at the 15, 2 and 9-yard lines. Ramsey, who averaged 41.9 yards while punting for the Bulldogs last season, will certainly be counted on heavily in Georgia’s final outings with UL- Lafayette and Georgia Tech, as well as the Bulldogs’ bowl game.
