Georgia was in control for the majority of the game and came away with a close 71-65 victory over Alabama in overtime in their last home game of the season.

The Bulldogs did not lose the lead until the overtime period and that was short lived as the Crimson Tide only lead for 14 seconds in the game. The Bulldogs’ ability to convert and score points off of the Crimson Tide’s turnovers and outrebound their opponent was the huge difference in this game. The Bulldogs outrebounded the Crimson Tide 51-41, which is outstanding because this Alabama team statistically is a much better rebounding team than this Georgia team.

However, I believe the most important stat in this game was the Bulldogs’ ability to outscore the Crimson Tide 20-12 in the area of points off turnovers. Although the Crimson Tide may have forced more turnovers than the Bulldogs, forcing 18 to Georgia’s 13, they did not capitalize on these extra possessions like the Bulldogs did and this ultimately was the deciding factor in the game.

Although this was the last home game for seniors, it was junior Mackenzie Engram who led the Bulldogs in scoring with 19 points. Engram also had a solid night rebounding as she finished with 8 rebounds. Engram’s buzzer beater at the end of the first quarter had her fired up and seemed to give her the momentum to finish off a great night. The only lowlight on Engram’s night was the fact that she fouled out with 53 seconds to play in overtime.

The Bulldogs also had a few other scorers in double-digits including Stephanie Paul, Caliya Robinson, and senior Pachis Roberts. Paul had a sneaky good night as she earned her 10 points by the 8:17 mark of the third quarter, but did not see much playing time in the quarter after that. Paul has been an effective player for the Bulldogs this season and should see increased playing time next season.

Robinson started off the night slow but got it going in the second half and overtime period where she earned all 11 of her points. Robinson played a key role in the Bulldogs winning the rebounding battle as she finished with 8 rebounds. The Bulldogs seem to go as Robinson goes and her play in overtime helped propel the Bulldogs to victory.

Roberts had a very nice game in what was her last night in Stegeman Coliseum as she finished with a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Roberts has been a steady contributor for the Bulldogs throughout the season and her performance on this night definitely helped the Bulldogs earn the win.

Shanea Armbrister also had a solid night in her last home game as a Bulldog as she finished as the Bulldogs leader in rebounds and steals with 12 and 3. Armbrister also had 7 points and was very close to finishing with a double-double. Armbrister’s efforts may not have led to her scoring more points but it definitely played a key role in earning the victory.

The Bulldogs are on a two-game winning streak and look to close the season with another win on the road against the Florida Gators on February 26th.
