University of Georgia shortstop Cam Shepherd has been invited to the 2017 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team Training Camp to compete for a roster spot on the nation’s premier summer collegiate team, the organization announced Monday.
 
 
A 6-1, 196-pound native of Duluth, Ga., Shepherd started all 57 games and led the Bulldogs with 74 hits including 16 doubles while batting .307 with five home runs and 28 RBI. He posted a .953 fielding percentage in 277 total chances and played error-free over the final 21 games of the season. In SEC action, Shepherd hit .310-2-11.
 
 
The 2017 Collegiate National Team Training Camp will meet at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C., and compete in a series of games with teams from the Coastal Plain League from June 20-25. USA Baseball will then play host to an international friendly series against Chinese Taipei and Cuba from June 27-July 7 in Cary, Charlotte and Durham, N.C. UCLA coach John Savage will manage the 2017 USA Collegiate National Team.
 
 
“We are all very excited for Cam,” Georgia’s Ike Cousins head baseball coach Scott Stricklin said. “This is a tremendous honor for him, one that he has earned through all of his hard work and dedication.”
 
 
The list of Bulldogs to play for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team include pitcher Robert Tyler (2015), shortstop Kyle Farmer (2012), catcher Clint Sammons (2002), pitcher Brian Powell (1994), pitcher Dave Fleming (1989) and pitcher Cris Carpenter (1987).
 
 
Recently, Shepherd earned Freshman All-America honors by Collegiate Baseball. Last month, Shepherd was named to the Freshmen All-SEC team as voted on by the league coaches. He earned a spot on the J. Reid Parker Director of Athletics Honor Roll too. He was set to play in the Cape Cod Summer Baseball League before receiving the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team Training Camp invitation.
