Charlie Tamayo, an accomplished gymnast in international competition and a recent assistant coach for the United States Naval Academy men’s gymnastics team, has been added as an assistant coach for the Georgia Gymdogs, announced by head coach Courtney Kupets Carter.

 
“I am very excited to have Charlie join the Georgia Gymnastics’ coaching staff,” said Kupets Carter. “Not only does he bring a wealth of knowledge but he has a contagious energy that makes for a great atmosphere in the gym. His positive attitude and steadfast determination is exactly what this program needs. I cannot wait for the Gym Dog community to get to know him.”
 
 
Tamayo helped Navy finish 11th nationally in 2017, the best finish in the program’s history. Prior to assisting the Midshipmen, he had coached elite youth gymnasts since 2004.
 
 
As a competitor, Tamayo was a three-time Pan American Games Champion, won a gold medal on vault at the Gymnastics World Cup in 2002 and a bronze medal on vault at the World Championships in 2001.
 
 
“It’s an honor for me to be a part of the UGA gymnastics team,” said Tamayo. “I am looking forward to helping our team to gain the confidence to get back to the top. Difficult roads can take you to amazing destinations, and I’m looking forward to being a part of that journey.”
 
 
Originally from Cuba, Tamayo received his degree from the Higher Institute of Physical Culture Manuel Fajardo in Havana, Cuba. Tamayo defected from his native country in 2003 before starting his coaching career.
