Thomas Brown, UGA’s Running Backs Coach, talks with the media after practice about senior fullback Quayvon Hicks and his progress over the offseason and from last year.

[su_spacer size=”40″] Coach Brown is asked about how hard, how tough is it for a guy the size of Quayvon Hicks to keep his pad level where it needs to be.He’s got all the physical tools to be a really good player. He’s been inconsistent at times, but I think as of late he’s done a really good job of being focused. I’m probably on him as much as I am on anybody as far as the fundamentals: pad level, playing physical, and playing as big as he is. He’s 265 lbs. I told him he should beating the mess out of people.

[su_spacer size=”40″] Pad level basically means a player getting his pads low enough to have leverage on or out leverage the defender to gain the advantage. The idea is be lower than your opponent and then attack, explode and drive through whomever is in front of you. It’s tough. I don’t think people understand how difficult the fullback position is. You cannot just plug in anybody and say: “Hey. Go be a fullback.” You got to be unselfish, and you got to be messed up in your mind to be a fullback. Those are always different types of guys.
[su_spacer size=”40″] Coach Brown is asked whether or not Quayvon Hicks will remain the number one fullback when Christian Payne comes back.
[su_spacer size=”40″]
[su_spacer size=”40″] Payne suffered a hairline fracture in his fibula from Georgia’s first scrimmage back on August 14th and is expected to miss approximately 4 weeks until the broken bone has mended, which would put him returning between the Vanderbilt or South Carolina game. At the time of his injury, the sophomore back was holding down the number one spot at fullback on depth chart with Quayvon second.I don’t know yet. We’ll see.
