Georgia cross country senior Bryan Kamau has been named the SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year and shares the honor with a pair of league runners, as voted on by the SEC’s head coaches.

Kamau, who is sharing the honor with Arkansas’ Alex George and Kentucky’s Jacob Thomson, is the first Georgia cross country team member to earn the accolade after it was first given out in 2014.

Growing up in Snellville, Ga., after being born in Kenya, Kamau has a 3.57 GPA in Financial Planning and has been on the 2015-16 SEC Academic Honor Rolls. He has earned a spot on the Dean’s List (3.5 or higher term GPA) and as a Presidential Scholar (4.0 term GPA) during his Bulldog career. In addition, Kamau is a representative on the UGA Athletic Association’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and was named to the 2016 SEC Community Service Team.

Kamau has led Georgia in his last 11 consecutive meets bridging the 2016 campaign. Most recently, he earned All-SEC Second Team honors with a 12th-place finish at the SEC Championships in Athens on October 27 to help lead UGA to a sixth-place team finish.

The Georgia men’s cross country team, who is ranked seventh in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) poll, travels on Wednesday to Tuscaloosa, Ala., for Friday’s NCAA South Regional. Ranked 14th nationally, the Lady Bulldogs made the trip with the Bulldog men and also compete on Friday morning for a chance at advancing to the NCAA Championships on November 18.
