Daily Dawg Thread – 01June2019 – Class Of 2021 QB Caleb Williams – By Matthew Hall
The Georgia Football program is fortunate to have UGA quarterback Jake Fromm coming back and embarking upon his Junior campaign this upcoming 2019 season. The Bulldogs’ gunslinger has been quite impressive over his first 2 seasons leading the Dawgs to a record of 24-5 while under center. Factor in that Fromm has thrown for 5,376 yards while throwing 54 touchdowns to only 13 interceptions and the Houston County, Georgia, product already rates among the best quarterbacks to ever play wearing the “Red and Black”. Fromm is poised to even have more control of the UGA offense in the coming year and is poised to have a monumental season provided he is not subject to any injuries that would subsequently sideline him along the way. As a matter of fact, six different prominent media entities have already identified Jake Fromm as a top-10 NFL draft pick next year with some of them such as CBS projecting him to be the #1 pick overall. With the possibility of Fromm departing Athens for the NFL following the conclusion of the upcoming season, UGA Head Coach Kirby Smart and the coaching staff must make the quarterback position one of focus as it relates to and in regards to recruiting.
The Dawgs’ already possess a quarterback commitment from the Class of 2020 that many are already calling the solidified replacement for Fromm upon his departure for the NFL. Class of 2020 4-Star QB commit Carson Beck of Mandarin High School in Jacksonville, Florida, is on tap to assume the reins for the Georgia Football program under center in the near future. Beck is currently rated the #3 overall Pro-Style QB in the country and the #9 overall player from the state of Florida for the Class of 2020 per 247Sports Composite Rankings. He is a very competitive quarterback and he possesses all of the intangibles that a program would seek after in a QB to include good arm strength, intelligence in the passing game and in the pocket, and superlative accuracy. Even with Beck in the fold to presumably be the UGA QB of the future, Kirby Smart and company are not taking any chances at the quarterback position. As previously noted recently on the Bulldawg Illustrated Daily Dawg Thread, the Georgia Football program has been and is currently courting another QB from the Class of 2021 in Brock Vandagriff of Prince Avenue Christian High School in Bogart, Georgia. He is expected to be on the Georgia campus during the first part of next week to possibly work out and throw for the UGA coaching staff. Likewise, a new prospective gunslinger set in the sights of the Georgia Bulldogs is also said to be in attendance in Athens to throw at the same time. The newer arm of interest is Class of 2021 QB Caleb Williams of Gonzaga High School in Washington, D.C.
Williams has garnered a great deal of attention this year and the #2 dual threat QB in the country for the Class of 2021 per 247Sports received offers from Georgia, Ohio State, and Texas A&M on the same day this past January. Williams is prototypical of quarterbacks as it relates to his frame and stature standing in at 6-1 and 197 pounds but he is expected to become more imposing in that aspect provided that he has time for growth given his youth. The D.C. quarterback prospect is a dangerous one with the ability to pulverize opposing defenses with both his arm and while on the run. His possesses a great leadership persona, is highly competitive, and has the status quo QB intangibles attached to his name as well. He can throw for accuracy whether the pass be via a short route or deep down the field for a dagger in the heart passing play. He is well-balanced and very composed in the pocket and is able to maintain that poise even in the midst of chaos that may be present around him. Given that he is on the run and find himself in field of play that is quite open, Williams is very difficult to track down.
As a Sophomore at Gonzaga in 2018, Williams threw for 1,685 yards and 10 touchdowns to 4 interceptions. He also rushed for some 229 yards on 83 carries and logged 8 rushing touchdowns to include 1 for over 100+ yards. The versatile dual threat quarterback even added a receiving touchdown on a lone reception for 9 yards in the same aforementioned campaign. Williams already holds 19 offers including ones from many Power 5 programs to include Alabama, Florida, Ohio State, Michigan, South Carolina, and Texas A&M among others. He has held a Georgia offer since January 21, 2019. Having Williams on campus this upcoming week is a positive sign showing that he at least have some feel and positive vibes about the football program that exists in Athens. Look for the Dawgs to continue to court and recruit Williams moving forward as UGA Head Coach Kirby Smart and the University of Georgia coaching staff attempt to obtain offensive security and talent at the quarterback position for the future well-being of the Georgia program.
