UGA has one 4-star quarterback committed for their 2020 recruiting class so far, 6-foot-5 and 226 lbs Carson Beck out of Mandarin High School in Jacksonville, but could the Bulldogs potentially take one more?
As of right now, Georgia’s quarterback depth chart consists of three players on scholarship and walk-ons.
- On Scholarship
- Jake Fromm | 6-foot-2 | 220 lbs junior out of Warner Robins, GA
- Stetson Bennett | 5-foot-11 | 190 lbs RS sophomore Blackshear, GA
- D’Wan Mathis | 6-foot-6 | 205 lbs freshman out of Oak Park, MI
- Preferred Walk-on and Walk-on
- Jes Sutherland | 6-foot-2 | 190 lbs graduate out of College Park, GA
- John Seter | 6-foot-3 | 180 lbs RS sophomore out of Athens, GA
- Noah Chumley | 6-foot-3 | 185 lbs freshman out of Savannah, GA
- Nathan Priestley | 6-foot-4 | 205 lbs freshman out of Los Angles, CA
Fromm has been the starter for the Dawgs since he came off the bench for former UGA quarterback Jacob Eason, who sustained a sprained knee injury in the season opener versus Appalachian State in 2017. Since then, Fromm has started 36 straight games for Georgia. He will be eligible to declare for the 2020 NFL Draft after this season is over, and whether he does so or decides to return for his senior season is up for debate.
If Fromm does forgo his senior year to seek fame and fortune in the pros, that leaves two current scholarship players headed into spring for the Bulldogs. Bennett, who is familiar with the offense but has yet to start a game for UGA, and Mathis, who has not been fully cleared for contact let alone to play after having emergency surgery to remove a cyst on his brain back in May. Bennett has had some limited playing time this season behind Fromm in three games. Of the walk-ons, Priestley is the No. 3 quarterback on the depth chart at the moment and he has seen limited cleanup duty in a couple of games this season.
Current quarterback, Carson Beck, is planning on enrolling early; so, potentially the Dawgs could have three on scholarship for next spring, assuming Mathis is cleared medically to return to play. With the question marks surrounding Fromm staying or going after the season and the health of Mathis, it would make sense for the Georgia coaching staff to look at signing a second quarterback in this recruiting class. May I present CJ Stroud.
Who is CJ Stroud?
Stroud is a 6-foot-3 and 194 lbs senior quarterback out of Rancho Cucamonga high school in Rancho Cucamonga, CA. He is rated a 4-star prospect by both 247Sports and Rivals.
247 has Stroud as the No. 4 pro-quarterback prospect for 2020, and the No. 14 player out of the state of California as well as 137th ranked recruit nationally. Rivals ranks Stroud as the No. 12 pro-quarterback prospect, the No. 24 player out of the state of California, and the No. 212th recruit overall in the country.
Stroud has picked up five scholarship offers since August from San Diego State, Oregon, Ohio State, UCLA, and most recently Michigan. He has over 19 offers so far, including one from UGA.
What are Georgia’s chances?
Stroud plans on taking an official visit to Oregon on November 30th, and he also has one scheduled to Ohio State for December 14th. The senior quarterback told 247 that he plans on taking an unofficial visit to UGA for the Texas A&M game on November 23rd and will most likely set up an official for sometime in December.
“ ‘I’ll be at Georgia in two weeks when they host Texas A&M,’ Stroud said. ‘That will be an unofficial visit and I’m going to get back in December for an official.’ “

And that is the first step for the Bulldogs, to get Stroud on campus. At the moment, Ohio State is considered the leader for the prospect from California.
Stats and Highlights
