Daily Dawg Thread – 22May2019 – Class of 2020 4-Star Safety Chris Thompson Jr. – By Matthew Hall
The Georgia Football program has been ablaze on the recruiting trail over the duration of the last few weeks as it relates to this year’s recruiting cycle. As so, the Bulldogs now have 10 commitments in the Class of 2020 and sit at #5 overall in the 247Sports Team Class Rankings for the respective class. The Dawgs also have several others names on its wish list of prospects that seem to be heavily in the mix to end up playing in Athens in the near future. Many of those prospective targets were visitors to the “The Classic City” this past weekend when UGA hosted a number of the most elite players in the nation and held its annual “Scavenger Hunt” activity that is becoming more and more synonymous with the program. One of those that was in attendance has recently let it be known that Georgia has quickly come into the fold of his top schools of choice. That target is Class of 2020 4-Star Safety Chris Thompson Jr. of Duncanville High School in Duncanville, Texas.
Many of those that follow recruiting closely may find Thompson’s acknowledgement of UGA among his top schools as a surprise and for good reason. The Dawgs were somewhat late in the game going after the Duncanville product extending an offer in his direction less than a month ago.
Moreover, his recent visit to Athens this past weekend was the first for the Texas safety. Undoubtedly it made a big impression on the highly sought after defensive prospect given that the Dawgs were immediately placed in the running for the “Lone Star State” recruiting target. Thompson recently proffered some insight on how his visit to the University of Georgia this past weekend went to the recruiting insiders over at 247Sports.
“I loved it. “I had a great time. I learned a lot of stuff. Coach Kirby Smart, he communicates a lot with the defensive backs, so that is a big plus. I realized their interest level in me as well. My dad likes Coach Smart and he says Georgia is a good school with tradition. The coaches stood out. We had a good time during the scavenger hunt and I really picked up a lot of things from the staff. They seem like pretty good guys. They see me as a free safety and money/nickel, but mainly free safety. I like that role because I think free safety fits my game. Georgia is definitely a top school.”

Thompson is rated the #3 safety in the nation and the #8 overall player in the state of Texas for the Class of 2020 per 247Sports Composite Rankings. He is stout in stature standing in at 6-2 and 195 pounds. Along with his athletic presence and size, the 4-Star safety is very physical and could possibly be the hardest hitting safety in all of high school football. The offenses that he plays against recognize quickly that they must be watchful of his defensive presence and awareness on the football field given his speed and intelligence that is exhibited on the gridiron. As a Sophomore in 2017, Thompson was named the District 7-6A Defensive Sophomore of the Year for the state of Texas. More of the same came from him as a Junior in 2018 where he was the unquestionable leader on the Duncanville High School defense that allowed less than 10 points per game and shut out six different opponents. His stellar play and leadership in his Junior campaign featured the Texas product logging some 72 tackles and going on to be named a 2018 MaxPreps High School Junior All-American.
Thompson currently holds 36 offers from some of the best programs in the nation to include Alabama, Clemson, and Auburn among others. He has let it be known that the Dawgs have been very aggressive in its recruitment of him following the extension of an offer at the end of April. It will take more of the same moving forward if UGA Head Coach Kirby Smart and company plan to land one of the best safety’s in all of America. Can the Georgia Football program continue on with its recruiting pipeline out of Texas by landing a commitment from Class of 2020 4-Star Safety Chris Thompson Jr.?
