Daily Dawg Thread – 26May2019 – Class Of 2021 Safety James Williams – By Matthew Hall
As the Georgia Football program continues to seek out some of the nation’s elite talent at the varying position groups in the current recruiting class, they are also heavily involved in looking beyond to the recruiting cycles of the future. This can be evidenced in the fact that the Dawgs have extended some 103 scholarship offers thus far to prospective recruiting targets in the Class of 2021. Even with so many scholarship offers thrown out to prospects in the respective class, the UGA Football program has not been the recipient of a single commitment from any player in the Class of 2021 as of this point. This does not mean that Georgia Football Head Coach Kirby Smart and the “Red and Black” program are not drawing any interest with any of the players of 2021 though. This weekend brought about a visit to Athens from the nation’s top safety prospect in the Class of 2021 James Williams of American Heritage High School in Opa Locka, Florida.
Williams is a big name and already considered to be one of the top recruiting targets in his class. He is currently rated the #1 Safety in the country and the #3 overall player in the state of Florida for the Class of 2021 per 247Sports Rankings. At one time Williams was verbally committed to the University of Miami but the defensive prospect decommitted from the Hurricanes just after the beginning of May.
While his decision to decommit from the “U” is bad news for the Hurricanes program, it is good news for the Dawgs and the other programs that are vying for the defensive standout. Moreover, it is a promising and encouraging sign to see the country’s best Safety in the Class of 2021 visit “The Classic City” and relay the missive that he had a great time in doing so. Williams already possesses great height and has a well-built and athletic frame to play defense standing in at 6-5 and 218 pounds. He is aggressive, quick, and has a formidable presence against opponents given his size and build. The “Sunshine State” prospect has shown that he can defend and play with control versus both the running and passing attacks of opposing offenses. In his Sophomore campaign for American Heritage, Williams garnered 64 total tackles (37 solo tackles, 27 assisted tackles), 5 tackles for loss, 1 forced fumble, and 4 interceptions to include 1 returned for a touchdown. He received an offer from the Georgia Football program on November 7, 2018, signaling that he has been a defensive target of the Dawgs for quite some time.
With a good impression made during this weekend’s visit to Athens, expect the Georgia Football program to keep the recruiting gas pedal pressed down on the elite Safety that hails from the same high school as former UGA and current New England Patriots running back Sony Michel. Williams would certainly be a fine prospect to gain a commitment from and one that would help bolster the defensive outlook for the Dawgs in the future. Stay tuned for more developments with this recruiting story and in the meantime, Go Dawgs!!!
