Daily Dawg Thread – 29Apr2019 – Class Of 2020 4-Star RB Seth McGowan – By Matthew Hall

Over the course of the last few days, several University of Georgia running back recruiting targets have been covered on the Daily Dawg Thread. These include Class of 2020 5-Star RB Kendall Milton and Class of 2020 5-Star RB MarShawn Lloyd. The running back position in the Class of 2020 is a crucial one for the Dawgs as Georgia RB Brian Herrien will be a senior this upcoming season and while the hope is that “Red and Black” running back D’Andre Swift will stay for his senior campaign following the upcoming year, there is always the possibility that he leaves early for the NFL Draft. If that scenario does indeed unfold, the RB position for this crop’s recruiting class is of vital importance and critical for the future of the rushing attack for the Georgia Football program. No one probably understands the aforementioned or sees it more clearly that UGA running backs Coach Dell McGee and one can bet that he is working overtime on the recruiting trail to secure a couple of high profile backs for the Class of 2020 in anticipation of both Herrien and Swift being gone following the Georgia Bulldogs 2019 campaign. Lucky for him, a major prospective running back that the Dawgs have been after recently named Georgia among the schools that make up his top 4 over the weekend: Class of 2020 4-Star RB Seth McGowan of Poteet High School in Mesquite, Texas.

While McGowan is not a 5-Star like his target counterparts Milton and Lloyd, he may be the most complete overall RB target altogether for the Dawgs. This can be argued and lobbied for as truth for a variety of different reasons. One is that more than any other RB recruiting that the Georgia Football program is in pursuit of, McGowan is likely the one that is most deadly serious about his academics and schooling. This type of characteristic speaks volumes about a potential recruit and shows that he is mature beyond his years and that he has his priorities in order aside from just playing the game of football. A recruit that possesses a good head on his shoulders generally equates to one that does not pose any problems academically or by way of any off the field shenanigans or trouble.

Aside from his academic priorities and his goals of excelling in the classroom, McGowan is an absolute human highlight reel from out of the backfield on the gridiron. He is currently ranked ranked the #11 overall running back in the nation and the #15 overall prospect in the state of Texas for the Class of 2020 per 247Sports Composite Rankings. Standing in at 5-11.5 and 215 pounds, the Texas prospect fits the prototypical mold and frame for a running back. Let it be known though, McGowan is not standard or an average back when it comes to his state of play on the football field. As a Junior McGowan rushed for some 1,614 yards and 25 touchdowns on 218 carries in 11 games. He also eclipsed the 1,000 yard rushing mark as a Sophomore running for 1,027 yards and 12 touchdowns on 148 carries in just 7 games in that season. Those numbers helped him earn the title of being named the District 15-5A Offensive Sophomore of the Year for the state of Texas in 2017.

One of the most notable and astonishing things about McGowan as a back are how quick he is with his feet and his ability to shift on a dime and accelerate through defenses. Further, he has exhibited that he has the capability to change the course and direction of a game single-handedly. McGowan already holds some 27 offers including ones from Alabama, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, USC, and LSU among others. He visited with UGA Head Coach Kirby Smart and Running Backs Coach Dell McGee in January and will take an official visit with Georgia this upcoming May. The Georgia Football program has recently appeared to have some form of recruiting funnel coming out of the state of Texas as the Dawgs garnered commitments from Class of 2020 4-Star CB Jalen Kimber and Class of 2020 4-Star OG Akinola Ogunbiyi both of whom hail from the “Lone Star State” just this past month. Could McGowan be the next Texas recruit to join the Dawgs’ 2020 recruiting class?
