SOFTBALL: Georgia Holds On, Wins 4-3 at Mizzou

No. 14/13 Georgia softball edged out the Missouri Tigers in game one of the series Thursday evening at the Mizzou Softball Stadium, 4-3.

The Bulldogs climb to 34-8 on the season and 8-5 in conference play. Georgia has won the series opener in all five conference series this season.

The Bulldogs plated their four runs in the first three innings of the contest. Georgia’s eight hits came from five different hitters including two-hit performances from Sydney Kuma, Jayda Kearney, and Lyndi Rae Davis. Kearney’s two hits combined with two walks had her on base four times in the game.

All four of Georgia’s runs came with two outs.

Sophomore Madison Kerpics (15-3) went the distance in the circle. She fanned six Tiger hitters, allowing three runs on eight hits, allowing just two walks.

What looked to have been a 1-2-3 inning to begin the game, Georgia caught a couple breaks and capitalized on them to push two runs across. A pair of two-out walks put two Bulldogs on. Kearney worked a nine-pitch at-bat into an RBI single through the left side to put Georgia ahead 1-0. After loading the bases, Davis legged out an infield single to plate Lacey Fincher, widening the first inning lead to 2-0.

The Tigers (24-16, 4-8) answered back in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead back to one, 2-1.

A two-out solo home run to centerfield off the bat of Kuma, her 11^th of the season, widened the lead back to two at 3-1 in the top of the second.

More two-out production came for the Bulldogs in the third when Ellie Armistead dropped a base hit into left, plating Jaiden Fields and going up three, 4-1.

Missouri’s Kim Wert used a two-out base hit back up the middle to plate one run in the home half of the third, 4-2. Cassidy Chaumont cut Georgia’s lead to one with a one-out solo home run in the bottom of the fifth, 4-3.

Kerpics was able to hold the Tigers scoreless in the sixth and seventh to secure the victory.

Game two of the series is set for 1 p.m., ET, Friday from Columbia. The game is set for a nationally televised audience on SEC Network.

Lettermen’s Flag Football Game Returns to G-Gay

Following a two-year absence, the annual lettermen’s flag football game returns this year prior to the G-Day spring game on Saturday, April 16 at Sanford Stadium. More than 50 Georgia football letterwinners from six different decades are expected to participate in the game, which begins at 10:15 a.m., prior to the G-Day kickoff at 1 p.m.

Jeffrey Thomas, who lettered at wide receiver from 1991-94, will coach the Red Team, while Demetrius Douglas, who lettered at linebacker from 1986-89, will coach the Black Team. Three-year letterman Bobby Poss (1969-71) and 1971 letterman Johnny Cobb will serve as the public address announcers during the game.

Other prominent Bulldog alums expected to participate include linebacker and 2006 co-captain Tony Taylor (2002-06), cornerback and 2001 captain Tim Wansley (1998-01), and wide receivers Tyson Browning (2003-05) and Michael Johnson (2001-03).

Kickoff for this year’s G-Day is set for 1 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN2, with Joe Tessitore, Greg McElroy, and Katie George on the call. Tickets cost $5, and Sanford Stadium gates will open at 10 a.m.

The Bulldogs 

Trent Bryde, Blake Croyder, Mathis Debru, Erik Grevelius, Philip Henning, Britton Johnston, Tristan McCormick, Thomas Paulsell, Miguel Perez Peña, Hamish Stewart and Ethan Quinn make up the roster for the Georgia Bulldogs for the 2021-22 season. 

Georgia appeared at the No.11 spot in the team rankings in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Team Ranking released Wednesday, April 13.

Several Georgia men’s tennis players were featured in the latest ITA National Rankings for singles and doubles that were released Wednesday, April 13.

Four Bulldogs appear in the singles rankings and two pairs in the doubles rankings. Graduate transfer Hamish Stewart leads the pack at No.14. 2020 ITA All-American senior Philip Henning takes the No.47 spot. Graduate transfer Tristan McCormick rings in at No.79 and four-time ITA-All American senior Trent Bryde rounds out the pack at No.107.

For doubles, Bryde and Henning are ranked No.27 and McCormick and Stewart are ranked No.63.

EQUESTRIAN: TCU Eliminates UGA in Quarterfinals

 The No. 5 University of Georgia equestrian team dropped a 12-8 decision to No. 4 TCU in the quarterfinals of the National Collegiate Equestrian Association National Championship on Thursday afternoon at the World Equestrian Center. 

Georgia finished the season with a 8-6 record. 

“Today did not go as we were planning it to,” Georgia head coach Meghan Boenig said. “Kudos to TCU who rode very well. I thought our energy and the preparedness of our team was right where it needed to be. You have to go out there and be really clean and really good and there were too many spots that we didn’t tick those boxes which resulted in this outcome. This was not the day to have one of those days. We are hurting because we wanted it for each other, our seniors, but we also know all of the good things that this group has brought together.”

Competition started in Fences with the Bulldogs jumping to a 3-2 lead. Sophomore Jordan Toering put Georgia on the board with a 248-236 point.  TCU took the next point before Georgia added two more.  Sophomore Emma Reichow rode to a 250 to top her opponent’s 199 and freshman Catalina Peralta received a 259 for her course over her Horned Frog counterpart’s 246.  TCU claimed the last Fences point. 

In the Western arena, Georgia edged the Horned Frogs, 3-2.  The Bulldogs claimed the first three points of the event.  Senior Sara Lewis started with a score of 220.5, slightly beating her opponent’s 220.  Senior Kendall Gill rode to a score of 207 to grab the next point and sophomore Leah Anderson bettered her opponent with a score of 224.5- the highest Horsemanship score of the meet. TCU won the last two points.

Georgia held a 6-4 advantage after two events.

TCU gained the lead after Flat, riding to a 4-1 score for the event.  Junior Ceci Bresch won Georgia’s lone point with a score of 255, compared to TCU’s 239. 

TCU rode away with the meet in Reining, adding four points to its total.  Junior Caitlin Lyons won Georgia’s only point for the event with a score of 214 over her opponent’s 212.5.

Georgia riders received eight NCEA All-America nods and earned 11 All-SEC honors. Sophomore Jordan Toering and junior Caitlin Lyons were named SEC Rider of the Year for Flat and Reining, respectively.  Jillian Stopperich was named Freshman Co-Horsemanship Rider of the Year while Jax Bound was named the Freshman Reining Rider of the Year.

WGOLF: “We’re not in the ideal position…, but they don’t crown champions on Thursday.”

The Georgia women’s golf team carded a second-straight 11-over 299 at the SEC Championships at Greystone Golf and Country Club on Thursday. The Bulldogs enter Friday’s final round of stroke play qualifying in 13th place, but just five shots off the cut for the eight-team match play bracket.

“We’re not in the ideal position after two days, but they don’t crown champions on Thursday,” head coach Josh Brewer said. “We’ve got some work we’ve got to take care of tomorrow, but we’re good enough. We’ve got the firepower to do it. We’ve just got to dig down a little deeper and get ready for a great challenge.”

The Bulldogs started quickly on Thursday, with five birdies leading to a 3-under team tally through six holes. At that point, Georgia had ascended to sixth on the team leaderboard with LoraLie Cowart at 2-under, Caterina Don at 1-under and Jenny Bae and Jo Hua Hung both at even on the day.

“We showed we can make birdies and move up the leaderboard,” Brewer said. “We’ve got to use that for tomorrow.” 

Georgia lost four strokes before the turn and three more at No. 10. The Bulldogs eventually played the back side at 10-over.

All five Georgia golfers shot between 74-76 in the second round. Bae led the Bulldogs with a 2-over 74, followed by a trio of 75s from Cowart, Don and Hung. Candice Mahé carded a 76.

“Regression toward the mean has to take over at some point,” Brewer said. “We’re due. We’ve hit a lot of good shots. It just takes that one little spark. Who’s it going to be? We have five great players just one of them has to get us jump-started, and we know we can take off and post a low number.”

On the team leaderboard, No. 20 Auburn leads No. 3 South Carolina by three strokes. The Tigers and Gamecocks are at 576 and 579, respectively. No. 14 LSU is third at 580 followed by a pack of 10 teams within 10 strokes of each other including No. 10 Florida at 588, No. 23 Ole Miss at 590, Vanderbilt at 591, No. 9 Alabama at 592, Mississippi State at 593, No. 22 Kentucky at 594, No. 19 Arkansas and Tennessee at 595, No. 11 Texas A&M at 597 and the Bulldogs at 598.

Auburn’s Megan Schofill leads the individual field at 7-under 137, one shot better than Tennessee’s Mikayla Bardwell. For Georgia, Hung is tied for 16th at 147, Don is tied for 30th at 149, Bae is tied for 36th at 150, Cowart is tied for 48th at 152 and Mahé is tied for 60th at 156.

Georgia will be paired Texas A&M and Missouri on Friday, teeing off from No. 10 beginning at 10:10 a.m. ET.
