OLYMPICS: Former Bulldog Shaunae Miller-Uibo Repeats As Olympic 400m Champion
Former Georgia NCAA champion Shaunae Miller-Uibo set a personal record to win her second consecutive gold medal in the 400-meter dash for the Bahamas at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, on Friday.
Miller-Uibo’s win is the seventh gold for the Bulldog track and field program and first since she dove at the line in 2016 and edged American Allyson Felix. Miller-Uibo’s national record time (48.36) makes her only the second woman in history to win two gold medals in the event. Her time ranks No. 6 on the world’s all-time list, edging out her former personal best of 48.37.
Current and former University of Georgia student-athletes from track and field and swimming and diving have now captured 10 medals at the 2021 Games, including current sprinter Elija Godwin’s bronze in the mixed 4x400m relay earlier this week.
This was the eighth of 10 days of track and field events (Athletics) as the Games continue.
Miller-Uibo, who was also an Olympic finalist this year in the 200m where she took eighth, started in lane seven and left the field behind by the final turn. Miller-Uibo topped the nearest competitor (Dominican Republic’s Marileidy Paulino, 49.20) by nearly a second as she crossed the line in 48.36.
A native of Nassau, Bahamas, Miller-Uibo captured her first Olympic gold by lunging at the line in Rio. She ran a 50.88 to win the 2013 NCAA indoor 400m title for the Lady Bulldogs and remains No. 12 on the all-time collegiate performer list. Miller is second on both the school’s all-time indoor list (50.88) and outdoor list (50.70). She is at her third Olympics.
On Saturday, the final Bulldog competitors will be represented at this Olympics. Former Bulldog All-American Charles Grethen will race in the 1500m final at 7:40 a.m. ET. Former Georgia NCAA champion Lynna Irby will conclude the Games for UGA as her 4x400m relay team lines up in the final at 8:30 a.m.
