WBB: SEC Announces 2022-23 Conference Schedule
Conference play will begin on Thursday, December 29, and run through Sunday, February 26. The schedule consists of a single round robin (10 games) of home and away with one permanent opponent (2 games) and two rotating opponents (4 games). The permanent opponents are Alabama-Auburn, Arkansas-Missouri, Florida-Georgia, Kentucky-South Carolina, LSU-Texas A&M, Ole Miss-Mississippi State, and Tennessee-Vanderbilt. Each team will play eight home games and eight away games. The rotating opponents change annually. The 2023 season marks the 14th year of the 16-game schedule for women’s basketball and the 11th with 14 teams.
The regular season concludes with the 2023 SEC Women’s Basketball Tournament being held for the sixth time at Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, S.C. The tournament, which will include all 14 teams, begins on Wednesday, March 1, and concludes with the championship game on Sunday, March 5.
The women’s basketball television schedule will be announced later, as will the times for all games.
Nicolas Cassidy’s run at U.S. Amateur Championship Comes to an end
Georgia senior Nicolas Cassidy’s run at the 2022 U.S. Amateur Championship came to an end in the Round of 64 on Wednesday.
Cassidy had a full day of golf on Wednesday. He finished stroke play Tuesday at 5-over 146 and had to return to the Ridgewood Country Club at 7:30 a.m. for a 15-for-11 playoff for a match play position. Cassidy made par on the par-3 15th covering 143 yards to advance.
That set up Cassidy’s Round of 64 match with Arizona State freshman Luke Porter. Their match was tightly contested throughout as the two were tied through 13 holes. Cassidy then went 2-up by taking Nos. 14 and 15 before Porter rallied by winning Nos. 17 and 18. The players returned to the par-4, 375-yard first, where Porter made a birdie and Cassidy posted a par for the decisive hole.
Junior Caleb Manuel, who will be joining the Bulldogs after two seasons at Connecticut, fired a 6-over 147 in stroke play, missing out on the playoff by just one shot.
Cassidy, Manuel, and the rest of the Bulldogs will open the fall portion of the 2022-23 season on Sept. 7-8 in the Frederica Cup on St. Simons Island.

Series History
Thursday’s match marks the sixth all-time meeting between Georgia and Georgia Southern and the first for the programs since a 6-0 Bulldogs win on Aug. 26, 2005, in Athens. Georgia has won all five previous meetings. Georgia Southern was the Bulldogs’ first-ever road opponent in 1995, a 2-1 win for Georgia. The Bulldogs hold a 34-1-3 record against in-state schools, with two more meetings this season coming against Georgia State and Kennesaw State. Additionally, Georgia is 9-0-0 all-time against members of the Sun Belt Conference.
Georgia Opens McAlpine Era and New Season
Georgia Soccer opens its 28th season Thursday evening with the first match of the Keidane McAlpine era against in-state rival Georgia Southern. McAlpine, who won the 2016 NCAA Championship at USC, is the sixth head coach in program history and carries a career .651 winning percentage into Athens. The Bulldogs are looking to continue the momentum from last season’s 11-5-3 record, which included two ranked wins. The team returns nearly 70 percent of its points and 60 percent of its minutes from last season. In the preseason SEC coaches’ poll, the Bulldogs were picked to finish tied for sixth with Vanderbilt.
Taking Notice
Numerous Bulldogs have received preseason plaudits, with graduates Abby Boyan, Dani Murguia, and Cecily Stoute named to the United Soccer Coaches’ Players to Watch List. The trio was also joined by teammates Madison Haugen, Ruby Hellstrom, Mallie McKenzie, and Dasia Torbert on the SEC Preseason Watch List.
Loaded with Experience
Thanks to the NCAA’s COVID-era eligibility changes, Georgia is equipped this season with four graduate players. Abby Boyan, Cecily Stoute, and Dani Murguia all return for their fifth seasons in Athens, with each earning their bachelor’s degree this year. All three players were named to the SEC Preseason Watch List and United Soccer Coaches’ Players to Watch List. They are joined by Washington transfer Ruby Hellstrom, who scored eight goals in 37 career starts for the Huskies.
