Back at Home

No. 16 Georgia returns home to face Kennesaw State at Turner Soccer Complex. Sunday’s meeting is the sixth all-time matchup between the Bulldogs and Owls, with Georgia holding a 4-1 advantage in the series. Georgia cruised to a 7-0 win in the most recent meeting on Sept. 4, 2022 in Kennesaw, the largest margin of victory of the Keidane McAlpine era. This is the only scheduled match against an in-state opponent this season, with Georgia holding a 38-1-3 record against Peach State foes.

Chaos in Carolina

Georgia faces a quick turnaround after a wild 4-3 loss at No. 5 North Carolina last Thursday, a result which snapped an eight-match unbeaten streak dating back to last season. Despite only mustering one shot in the first 50 minutes of play, the Bulldogs knotted the score at one following an open-net equalizer from graduate forward Margie Detrizio. After surrendering two quick UNC goals, fellow grad forward Hannah White narrowed the margin with a rocket from the top of the 18. White then earned her second career brace with an amazing sidewinder in the final minute of the play, wrapping up a valiant effort for the Bulldogs.

Dawg Bites

  • Hannah White tied her career high with two goals, picking up her second career brace following two against Southern Miss last season. White now has eight career goals as a Bulldog, moving her into first among active players.
  • Thursday’s match was the first in program history to have three unassisted goals, setting a new program record. Despite only tallying six shots, the Bulldogs made the most of their chances, converting all three of their shots on frame against UNC keeper Clare Gagne.
  • Junior goalkeeper Jordan Brown faced an aggressive Tar Heel attack throughout the match but was able to keep the Bulldogs in contention with nine saves, the second-most of her career.

Senior Day at Turner

Prior to Sunday’s match, Georgia will recognize seven members of its senior class in the annual Senior Day ceremony. The class is highlighted by two four-year seniors, Jessie Dunn and Ellie Gilbert, who rank first and second among active players in starts and minutes. Defender Alyssa Stadeker, forward Olivia Briede, and midfielder Aly Akers will be honored following multi-year stints after transferring in, while newcomers Margie Detrizio and Maddy Pirrello will be recognized in the ceremony.

Coaching Connections

Two members of the Kennesaw State coaching staff carry close ties to the Georgia program and staff. KSU head coach Chris Cahill broke into collegiate coaching as a graduate assistant and volunteer coach at Auburn from 2009-11, working under Georgia head coach Keidane McAlpine and coaching Georgia assistant Sammy Towne. Together, the trio helped the Tigers win the 2010 SEC West and 2011 SEC Tournament titles. Owls assistant coach Dani Murguia compiled a terrific five-year career in Athens, finishing fifth all-time in points (63) and assists (21) over 92 appearances. She tied the single-season assist record (11) in 2021 and was named to the SEC All-Tournament Team in 2022 with goals in both of Georgia’s contests.
