Brock Bowers is the 2023 John Mackey Award winner
Bulldog junior Brock Bowers won the 2023 John Mackey Award given to college football’s top tight end a year after capturing his first Mackey Award, according to an announcement during the virtual Home Depot ESPN College Football Awards Show Friday night.
Bowers, a native of Napa, Calif., is the only Bulldog to ever win the Mackey Award. In fact, he becomes the first two-time winner from any school of the honor that originated in 2000.
In addition, the following Bulldogs were named to the Walter Camp All-America Team during the show: First Team – Bowers, sophomore S Malaki Starks; Second Team – junior C Sedrick Van Pran.
Bowers is the team leader with 56 catches for 714 yards and six touchdowns this season. He also has six carries for 28 yards and one score. In addition, Bowers has been a pivotal blocker for a Bulldog offense that averages 177.3 yards on the ground and has allowed less than a sack each game.
Bowers was an All-SEC First Team selection on Tuesday, was a Rotary Lombardi Award finalist for the second time and was a semifinalist for the Maxwell and Biletnikoff awards and the Walter Camp Player of the Year.
Ladd McConkey wins the 2023 Wuerffel Trophy
Georgia junior receiver Ladd McConkey has won the 2023 Wuerffel Trophy which honors college football’s most impactful community service leaders, according to an announcement on The Home Deport College Football Awards on ESPN Friday night.
McConkey was selected from the other two finalists in Notre Dame linebacker JD Bertrand and Michigan running back Blake Corum. The formal presentation of the trophy will take place Feb. 17, 2024, at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.
McConkey, a native of Chatsworth, Ga., is Georgia’s first winner of the award that originated in 2005. McConkey was the fifth finalist for the Bulldogs since 2011: Nakobe Dean (2021), Chris Conley (2014), Aaron Murray (2012) and Drew Butler (2011).
While winning back-to-back-National Championships and scoring two touchdowns in the 2022 College Football Playoff title game is the pinnacle of a student-athlete’s career accomplishments, what McConkey does off the field is just as impressive. The 2023 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team member and Campbell Trophy finalist has volunteered for a myriad of charities throughout his Bulldog career. McConkey also graduated with a 3.8 GPA in Finance in just three years from Georgia.
College football’s premier award for community service, and one of the most meaningful awards in collegiate sports, the Wuerffel Trophy is named after Danny Wuerffel, the 1996 Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback from the University of Florida who pivoted his success on the football field into a lifetime of service. The Wuerffel Trophy embodies Danny’s commitment to being a humanitarian, while honoring student-athletes who serve others and make a positive impact on society.
McConkey will be in New York City alongside Wuerffel this weekend as the Heisman Trophy Trust invites the Wuerffel Trophy winner to be recognized at all their festivities over the weekend.
GYM: GymDogs annual First Look exhibition this afternoon
Georgia gymnastics fans will have their first chance to see the 2024 GymDogs at the Annual “First Look” this Saturday, December 9, at 3:45 p.m. at Stegeman Coliseum.
“We’re so excited to be giving our fans a ‘first look’ at our routines and the excitement the GymDogs will bring to the season,” head coach Courtney Kupets Carter said. “We have a lot of new faces on the roster and this is a great opportunity for them to get acclimated to the competitive environment of Stegeman. We can’t wait to see everyone there.”
The GymDogs will compete together on vault before splitting to alternate on bars and beam for rotations two and three and then compete together again on floor to finish the day. The top five scores from each event will be counted for an overall team total.
Admission to the “First Look” is free and the event will be available through live stream on SEC Network +.
WSD: Callie Dickinson has been selected as a recipient of the NCAA Today’s Top 10 Award
Recent University of Georgia swimmer Callie Dickinson has been selected as a recipient of the NCAA Today’s Top 10 Award and will be honored at the NCAA Convention in January, as announced by the organization Friday afternoon.
The award recognizes former student-athletes for their exceptional athletic and academic achievements, as well as their contributions to their campuses and communities. The Today’s Top 10 awardees were selected by the NCAA Honors Committee, composed of representatives from NCAA member schools and conferences, as well as nationally distinguished citizens, including past awardees.
Dickinson is the seventh Georgia women’s swimmer to receive the Top 10/Top VIII Award and the first since Shannon Vreeland in 2015. Previous Bulldog honorees included Lisa Coole (1998), Kristy Kowal (2001), Kim Black (2002), Samantha Arsenault (2006), and Wendy Trott (2013). She is the only swimmer selected for this year’s award and one of four honorees from the Southeastern Conference.
Along with the Top 10 award, Dickinson is one of nine finalists for the NCAA Woman of the Year, having previously been nominated by the University of Georgia and the Southeastern Conference as she advanced to the Top 30. She was eventually chosen as one of three finalists from Division I. Dickinson is the 17th Georgia swimmer to be nominated by the university and the 10th Bulldog to advance to the last round of finalists.
The awardees will be honored on Wednesday, Jan. 10, at the NCAA Convention Welcome and Awards Presentation in Phoenix, Arizona. The presentation of the Woman of the Year Top 30 finalists and awarding of the NCAA Woman of the Year will also take place at the convention.
Dickinson, a native of Virginia Beach, Virginia, previously received the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship and the SEC H. Boyd McWhorter Women’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award. She graduated in August with a master’s degree in Comparative Biomedical Sciences. In May 2022, she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Human Development & Family Science, earning Summa Cum Laude honors with a 3.92 GPA. After graduating with a master’s degree in Comparative Biomedical Sciences, she is intending to pursue a career as an orthopedic surgeon, while continuing to train in preparation for upcoming international events.
During her five seasons in Athens, Dickinson qualified for the NCAA Championships in all five seasons and earned six CSCAA All-America honors, including a 2022 First Team honor in the 800-yard freestyle relay and an individual citation this season in the 200-yard butterfly. At the SEC Championships, she won four medals, including a silver medal this season in the 200-yard butterfly. She closed her career with top-10 times in program history in four events: 200-yard medley relay, 200-yard backstroke, 200-yard butterfly, and 100-yard butterfly. In international competition, she has competed at two U.S. Olympic Trials and reached two finals at this year’s Phillips 66 National Championships. This past August, she reached the semifinals of the 100-meter and 200-meter butterfly at the World University Games in Chengdu, China.
Dickinson was named to the College Sports Communicators/CoSIDA Academic All-District Team in 2022 and 2023. She was also named to the CSCAA Scholar All-America Team and the SEC Academic Honor Roll in all five seasons, along with being named to the 2021 SEC Community Service Team. A member of the J. Reid Parker Director of Athletics Honor Roll in each semester, she has received Presidential Scholar honors (4.0 GPA with 14+ credit hours) three times. She is the president of the UGA chapter of the Blue Key Honor Society, a member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, a team representative on the UGA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, and a member of the UGA Leadership Education and Development (L.E.A.D.) Academy.
