WGOLF: Dawgs add to top-ranked class

Josh Brewer

The Georgia women’s golf team’s recruiting class, already ranked as the best in the nation on the Golf Channel, has added three more signees. Graduate transfers Bernice Olivarez Ilas and Napat “Jenny” Lertsadwattana and prep prospect Grace Frei have signed letters of intent to join the Bulldogs in the fall of 2023, head coach Josh Brewer announced on Thursday.

“With the team we have being older and us losing a large nucleus from that group, we felt like we needed to add to our roster,” Brewer said. “Jenny and Bernice are graduate transfers who have competed at an elite level and been among the best golfers in their conference throughout their careers, and Grace is someone we feel like can develop and help us throughout our program during her college career.”

Ilas, who is from Ayala Alabang, Philippines, will arrive in Athens after playing the previous four seasons at San Diego State. She earned second-team All-Mountain West honors last season and has participated in NCAA Regionals each of the past two years, with the Aztecs as a team in 2021 and individually in 2022. In her first three and half seasons at San Diego State, Ilas has competed in 27 tournaments, notching a pair of top-5, five top-10 and nine top-20 individual finishes. That list includes sixth and 12th place finishes at the Mountain West Championships in 2022 and 2021, respectively. She recorded a career-best tie for third at the Julie Inkster at Meadow Club Invitational in 2021.

Lertsadwattana (pronounced Lert-sahd-wuh-tah-nah), who is a native of Bangkok, Thailand, enjoyed a stellar fall season at New Mexico that featured medalist honors at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate. She will enter the spring ranked No. 53 nationally according to Golfstat, as well as No. 64 by Golfstat. Lertsadwattana was named second-team All-Mountain West in 2021 after being tabbed as the league’s Freshman of the Year in 2020. She has participated in 30 tournaments for the Lobos during her collegiate career, posting 11 top-10 and 18 top-20 individual finishes. Lertsadwattana participated in both 2021 and 2022 NCAA Regionals, including an 11th-place showing at the Albuquerque Regional last spring.

Frei, who hails from The Colony, Texas, enjoyed a strong 2022 campaign on the American Junior Golf Tour. She recorded top-5 finishes in all four tournaments she played, placing third at both the Huntsville.org Junior Championship and the Vaughn Taylor Championhship presented by Jamie Hardie and fifth at both the Bass Pro Shops / Payne Stewart Junior Championship and the Gateway First Bank Tulsa Junior hosted by Bo Van Pelt. She also has competed in 22 tournaments on the North Texas PGA Junior Tour from 2019-22, with 13 top-10 finishes and a pair or victories at the 2019 Metro Medalist: M457 and the 2021 AAT: Girls Series No. 10.

Earlier this fall, Georgia signed a trio of freshman to join the Bulldogs in 2023 – Savannah de Bock, Celine Sanne and Natachanok “Drive” Tunwannarux  (pronounced Nuh-tah-nuh-chah-nook Ton-wanna-rux). Both de Bock and Sanne were listed among the top-25 signees in the Class of 2023 according to Golf Channel analyst Brentley Romine, with de Bock at No. 6 and Sanne at No.
